Hi- Have pulled this trans out of my '55 Chevy Truck (in the snow!) and I'm going to run through it before I chuck it back in, just hoping not to get too deep into it! The serial numbers are CA56 -5899 , looking about that should be a 1956 Cadillac(?) Dual Band, but it doesn't seem to match the pictures I see on Google for that type. It's mated to a Pontiac 347, and has a cast metal body (heavy!). Any tips on how to inspect/replace front seal and check it over would be great-thanks! Are there any internet manuals that anyone can recommend-please? Pictures attached... onwards and upwards! Rich
I don't know much, except I think the Pontiac one had the shortest tail housing? I can compare with an Olds that I have, if it helps.
Any help at all would be great, just like to know what I'm working on and get it built right first time, I like reliability ! Thanks Rich
What is the distance between the two top holes, the one for my olds is 8". It is a slant pan os it is not caddy of it is '56 it would be '56 or earlier pontiac or olds.
What you have is a single coupling, dual range Hydramatic.Get yourself an old Motors Manual, It will walk you through it. In order to get to the front seal you have to remove the torus assembly. There is a lock tab on the big nut on the mainshaft, fold it back and remove the nut this will allow the one piece of the torus to slide off the shaft, then there is a snap ring on the inner member, remove it and you will have access to the front pump seal.
Brilliant... thanks- I'm already down to 'the big nut'- ,need to buy a socket to fit it in the morning- I'll carry on from there! Thanks again Rich
when you wrote that it was in a chevy i was confused. but with a pontiac engine it is a gmc and the trans allso gmc not a pontiac there is a diffrence .i mention this when you order parts.pontiac passegercar trans is not the same as gmc v8 trans
