Anyone here in the Valley (phx area) ever remove and replace a rear main seal in a yblock? I need to do that and remove and replace my steering box. If anyone has done these before and would be willing to either walk me thru it or would like to have a garage day in a few weeks, it would be appreciated. I'll feed ya and supply booze as well. I can do the steering box I think, just removing the pitman arm is a B. Anywho, let me know! Thanks, Rocky
The older style rope seal are notorious leakers to remove one Lisle makes a tool to remove and install one available at NAPA,for the new seal get the neoprene style from Fel-Pro.Send member rustyfords a pm I think He has a post on file from www.1954ford which he moderates with pictures of the steering box R&R and rebuild.
Rocky , The rope seals can be a ***** sometimes . I use to just drop the oil pan , loosen all the crank mains and drop the crank about a 1/8 " then take the old rope out and install the new rope one in . It's more work but a lot easier to get the rear main rope seal in place unless you are using a rubber one which are really better ! Silicon on the corners helps too when putting back together . Sometimes you can get lucky to get the seals in but I never was . Does safe a ton of cussing and throwing tools around ! On the steering box that one is pretty much simple . You will need a pitman puller to get the old one off or a torch to heat it up some . If you have a press for doing bearing , you can take it off very easily that way ! Jim
