Ok, so it's not trad, but I've got a problem with my 98 Chevy brakes, if you're rollin down the freeway and go to hit the brakes, they go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down and the brake light on my dash comes on, pump em once and they're fine, fine if rollin around town too, no leaks visible from wheel cylinders or M/C booster setup, any ideas as to what the hell is causing this and how to fix it??? Thanks In Advance Skip
I am gonna steer away from the other suggestions here. It sounds like you have a leak in either the front or rear lines causing the shuttle inside the combination vavle to close off one side. The fact that the pedal dropped and you pumped it once and it came up suggests this to me. The warning light coming on confirms it. Check the rear wheel cylinders, brake hoses and such look for signs of leaking. If there is baffling inside your brake fluid resevoir, can you see if one side is lower than the other? It may narrow it down a bit..
Everybody can be right... If the front or rear M/cyl piston seal fails internally that side will have low pressure tripping the light with out having an external leak. It can be intermittant when it starts to go. If you can't find any leaks it's probably the M/cyl. If you find a leak...
I'll add another thought... check the front brakes.. if they're worn, ya gotta pump the brakes to take up the slack between the piston and the pads. If you don't go to El Mirage I'm gonna kick you in the nuts.
loosen bolts at booster holding Master to booster and see if Master is byp***ing and leaking into the booster.that would explain no visible leaks. Also it can happen on a manual set up with no booster and can leak inside the car and seep into the carpet. we have to remember that NEW car doesnt mean its ever been right to start with.[My 2000 Olds had a recall to replace entire front brake ***y's at 10K!]
