Earlier today, as I was just looking through all the postings, I found one that had an aluminum Powerglide, with an aftermarket bell-housing, with cast in provisions for side mounting in a Tri-Five Chevrolet. Now, I can't find it, don't remember the thread, and I need to find out more about that bell-housing; I've never seen one like it. HELP!!! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Sorry i cant be more of help but there's a guy looking for the same part. Look here https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/help-me-find-a-thread-please.1137460/
No one? I thought it would have stood out, because it was pretty obvious. Wish I'd payed more attention at the time to the thread. Do the Mods have any idea? I keep looking through 12 pages of posts, but no luck so far. HELP! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Was it this one? https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/250-6-cyl-into-61-chevy-biscayne.1136098/#post-12909846
That wouldn't be the one. I think he is looking for an aftermarket bellhousing that calls for cutting the original bell housing off the trans and bolting it on the glide. Probably for swapping an aluminum glide into a Tri-5 for the drags in it's original intent.
Not an ad? A thread? 56, did you read any of it at all? Especially the ***le? If so, think of any particular terms we could use to search with.

It's what I'm looking for (Tri-Five, aluminum Glide with stock bellhpousing cut off, and a specialty bellhousing bolted to the front pump) , but no one has found it yet; I've been looking, and have turned up nothing. I should have made a note, but NO, "I'll remember it". My lovely wife likes to remind me of that! I really thought I'd remember it, now I'm sorry I did't write it down! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Butch, I realize you are talking powerglides here but just wondering, is this like what John Kilgore (TransGo) was doing many years ago, I want to say it was a way to use the BOP turbo 400's because they were cheaper/ more readily available.
It's similar to that, and to the aftermarket ,SFI approved bells that don't need a liner, a blanket, or a flexplate shield.. The ONLY real difference with the one I'm trying to find again, is it has the side mounts for the 55-57 Chevrolet's cast right in; it's not an add on or a kit. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Butch, Have you tried Hypnosis? Sit back, take a deep breath, relax, close your eye's. Your getting sleepy, do you remember any search words OR anyone's avatar that was on the thread? If you remember an avatar or name you can go into their Profile and check their posting/thread history. Anyway here' a bump for Butch!
Butch, I couldn't find the article you are looking for, but the outfit below states that they have the housing with the 55 mounts. Bob J.W. Performance Transmissions, P/N 92450 Powerglide Bellhousing.
I have trouble using the search thread on here. Several times I have done a google search and it leads me back to the hamb and then is when I find what I was looking for.
What rusty said. Type in all you can remember and include the word HAMB in a Google search. It's usually easier than using this sites search function
I'm with DDDenny. Recall a magazine article years ago on John Kilgore transmissions and it was primarily concerned with using this bell housing for TH400 for changing from the BOP pattern to Chev. It definitely had the cast in side mounts. Couldn't find it on his webpage but it did show a picture of a lightweight drag race TH400 with a removeable bell housing.
Butch, whenever I see a thread with good info for me, I immediately go to the top right side, and click on "watch thread". As a senior (75), I can't trust my short term memory any more. Bob
I've done everything I can thinks of, and have spent hours looking through various threads; no luck. If I stop looking, it'll fall out of the sky and land right at my feet. Thanks for the help. I looked all through the J.W. Performance Transmissions site, and i could't find anything Tri-Five mounts-TH400/TH350/Powerglide related. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Yep, just looked threw JW and found nothing. They look like one of the go to guy's for Powerglides, maybe a phone call to them in the morn about what your needing would shed some light? If they don't make it maybe they know who does or did?
Like j-jock the closest thing I found was the J.W. part number 92450 as listed in Summit, and if you punch in the little blue (check fit icon) it show that it fits 55-57 265-283 Chevrolet's. Sometimes cataloged parts picture displayed might not be the same as part number listed.. The picture don't show any bolt holes for mounts but the bell has an extended lower area, maybe all it needs to be drilled and tapped? J.W. Performance in Florida 321-632-6205 Norb
I was the third Hamber to call J.W. Tech guy today, probably us lol They don't make it with the 55-57 Chevy mounting Nice Guy that knew what he was talking about, and he agreed that there may be a market for one. Norb
What is maddening about the lack of the 55 mount pads, is that on the youtube video I would swear I heard him say that there were pads for the 55. I never checked the catalogue because, since they were looking right at the bellhousing when they installed it, I just ***umed that they had to know the pads were cast on the unit. It is a bummer, because I continued to search, and found nothing else. My reason for continuing to search, is that I am looking to do the same on a BOP TH400, so it wasn't a total waste of time for me. I have a rebuilt BOP TH400, with a Transgo shift kit and all, and I want to convert it to the bellhousing with the Chevy rear mounts. The present TH400 transmission has been in the truck since 1974, and the only thing I did to it when I installed it, was to install the Transgo shift kit, and change to synthetic ATF in 1980. It is still working well, but I don't know if I should keep running it, or pull it out for an overhaul. Bob
As far as the overhaul goes... If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It would certainly be handy to have the bellhousing mounts on an aluminium case automatic trans though!
