Just scored some flat head engines and had a gearbox included in the deal. Seller was not sure on the box but thought it was a Ford Pilot Box 3 speed manual - only markings I have uncovered so far a just in front of the shifter and are as follows 25 then beow this 1A-7222 there may also be an 8 in front of the 1,
    Hope some one can help
    Thanks

Description, please--81A would be an early Ford floor shift, 1A would be a '51 sideshift plate. If Pilot, it would have an early trans with integral bell, if late ford trans would not be part of bellhousing.

This link will show all the details of the "39 Ford" top loader transmission:

As Bruce said, the 81A series will be a top loader and the 1A series would be a side load three speed shifter housing. Ford stopped putting the VIN (serial number) on the ****** case with the 1949 p***enger cars' new trans. They continued the 78 series case up thru 1950 on the light duty pickups with a top loader three speed trans. I do not know what Ford used on the Pilot cars as far as a trans goes, so I can't help ID that.............. Mac VP

Pilots definitel used an early Ford trans...but I think column shift???
And a 1A would seem odd in England...should likely beee something like E1A or 1aF or some such for a right drive version, I'd think...

Ooops!! Didn't mean to call anyone from Belfast "English"...I understand that might be taken poorly by some factions in that area!!

How's that joke end?? "...and I'm the luckiest Arab in Belfast!"
