I have several options at this point. I like the 15" aluminum spares for the size and they're lightweight, but do they look out of place on an HA/GR? I'd mount them on Model T hubs (fill and re-drill) and use a Model T front end. I'd need to get another hub and both sets of bearings. I picked up some Chevy 16" artillery wheels (these are going on back, if I can find a reasonably priced tire), so I believe the front axle would be early-to-mid-30's Chev. It's got hubs (w/o brakes) that are pretty much ready to go. I got some 18" wire wheels with the other front axle that mount on the Chev front end. So, the Chev front end with wires is the 2nd option. The wire wheels are heavier, I want the front wheel/tire combo to be smaller, and the tires look to be more expensive. Option 3 is a '37 Ford front end with wide-5 wheels. I love the wide-5's, but again it's heavier, not the look I want, and the tires are more costly. So, the main question is do the aluminiums look out of place? Which combo do you like? Thanks, Kurt
I'd run the Chevy axle, (with lots of holes) 18" wires and motorcycle tires on the front. You already have the parts...use them. Otherwise if you were going to use a "T" front axle...get a set of 21" "T" wires. The aluminum spares look like they belong on a ricer. Just my $0.02 The artillery wheels are great for the rear...check with Old6rodder, he found some good 16" tires for the Barn Job.
From a looks point of view, ....... as they are. How 'bout poking some holes in'em? Could improve the looks and make'em even lighter if done well. I really like the T axle idea, my first try would be that and a circle of 3" to 4" holes in the ricer rims, depending on the layout spacing. The structure should handle the holes OK if you leave a 2" web between'em. My second choice'd be the Chev & wires with m/c tires. With holes of course. The artilleries for the rear are great.
Hay now! Those are genuwhine Ferd aluminum spare wheels! Yeah, I considered putting the wheels in my home CNC-milling center and cooking up some crazy design. Like someone jokingly mentioned in another thread, I could try to make them look like wood spokes.
That's fine if you are building a genuwhine Ferd aluminum They just look too new and she shape don't work. Yes, I'm biased to vintage parts!
I'm considering painting them, but not sure what color. I'm thinking of Chinese red for the rears, and they'd probably look goofy that color.
