I need some help with my 32 ford 5 window roof insert please. I don't like it but I don't know or understand how it was installed. The first pic should be of the top of the roof insert with bondo. The second pic should be of the inside looking up towards the roof. So I have some questions and the answers will determine if I attempt to rip it out. 1. How does it look like it was welded in? It looks like little mountains of metal pointing down. 2. How would I go about ripping it all out? How hard would it be? 3 If the metal channel is screwed up under the insert, does anyone sell the stock stuff? Thanks in advance for your replies. Please remember I have virtually no experience with this so go easy.
Those mountains are from spot welding with a mig, fairly hot. But not a continous weld. If the roof was mudded and was fairly straight, I would have left it alone. Good intentions can lead to a mess, if you don't have the skills to rip it all out and do it any better than it was. So now that you sanded it, or someone did, now the mud work is real wavy from my screen....so make up your mind to just reskim it, or open Pandoras box
Actually it is pretty straight still. It was just gently blasted. Not with sand. Hard to tell from the pic though.
Well, like I said about good intentions... Many will say rip it all out. I've been there, and on some, I did regret starting over. It all depends on your goals, your cost level of final painting supplies etc. If the paint supplies you want are not high end?...then.. The world is not perfect, and not all cars need to be done to the strictest standards. JMO
Sage advice from FJ; a friend just completed the task you are considering,so let me say that it is possible to redo that top correctly. 1 It takes skill and experience and patience. 2 The best reason to attempt it would be if there is any sign that the present body work will not hold up and is therefore not worth painting over. 3 Another reason is if you can't stand knowing what's underneath the finish when it's done.
What is your ultimate goal? From my view, the original top structure seems to be either heavily modified or missing. If the original top structure is any thing but original, you will have a difficult time getting it to the original insert type stage. My recommendation (FWIW) would be to leave it as is, or purchase a metal replacement insert, place the vinyl top material on it. Good luck with what ever you decide.
ok pretty much everyone agrees. anyone else want to voice your opinion? considering my level of experience, maybe you are all right.
if its not gonna be a high end show car then leave it alone. sometimes its not worth all the trouble to fix something that was not even broken to begin with. when you paint it it will still look good and thats all that matters, thats if your keepin and driving it. JMO
