My Wagon won't run. I've had a good friend of mine over the last few weekends to help but can't expect him to keep donating his time for this. I'm not very mechanical. He's replaced the plugs, fuel line, fuel filter. Took apart the carb and cleaned it. Replaced points and condenser. It is getting gas. It fires up and smokes then dies. Won't idle. I need my car back! Anyone in Spokane that can come to the house and get this working? I'll pay ya an honest wage. I'm in Hillyard on Crestline near Wellesley.
Why not find a mechanic and have AAA tow the car over there? I'm not a mechanic, I'm a vet, but I generally find that when I do make a housecall, I usually have everything except the one thing I really need. It's hard to figure out all the diagnostic tools and things you might need away from the shop.
That's my next option. I was hoping a Hamber could come by and I could pay them but if no takers I'll tow it.
I was just visiting my brother in Spokane last week. If I were still there I'd come by and help you. Sounds like a carb issue. When and how did this problem start?
It's always better to tow it. Whenever you go to someone's house, you inevitably forget something. Running back and forth takes too much time.
1. Did it run before you changed the manifold and carb? 2. Did you make any other changes? Won't run after making a change usually goes right back to something in the change. 3. Is the float level right? 4. Are the idle mixture screws adjusted right or at least within the ball park? 5. Is the idle speed screw adjusted so that the it won't try to idle too slow and die? 6. Correct gaskets between the carb and manifold and between any adapter plates and carb and manifold? 7. Is the choke hooked up and working? I've run Holley's for 40 years and had good luck with them most of the time but they can be hell for temperamental when the engine is cold if they aren't set up just right.
sounds like the carb floats are not set right, its a fueling problem. ignition isnt an issue, the carb is getting fuel. what color is the smoke? how long does it run for?
Smoke is white. It fires up and runs for a few seconds then dies. I think it must be the carb. I was driving it last month and all was well. Then turned a corner and it died, I turned the ignition and it started right back up. Drove it home parked it then the next day it was dead. My friend who has been helping has another carb. Maybe that will work. Thanks for the response.
If it's smoking pretty bad and the smoke's white and you're losing water you may need to pull the intake and make sure it's sealing to the block right. You may have water flowing through the ***bustion chamber. Try calling Tim Hein at Hein's Hot Rods. He'd probably come check it out for ya. (509) 456-7422
Thanks all. Is Tim Hein still on Barker? Or am I thinking of someone else? There is a gas smell in the oil. I think I've found someone to work on it. Again thanks for al the response. I appreciate it!!
