Ok, maybe i am a little too late, but I am an Aussie living and working in Singapore, i can see Malaysia from my office window!!

I can get that car to Malaysia, easy, it's not what you know, it's who you know over here. I also have many air freight contacts.

One thing, what was the shipping terms? To port? To door? duty paid etc? Malaysian customs usually take bribes to get this sort of "unudual" stuff through.

Let me know if i can help in anyway, I would be happy to help you.

I know, regular knight in shining armour!!

OMG I know the US education system isnt perfect, nor is ours but mate I think you might need to jump on the net or something because the two countries have very little in common. Malaysia is a thriving country whilst Nigeria - well ...........

I hope this really works out, its a great story so far. You go girl!!!!!

..and we in OZ know that Malaysia wasn't refered to by a former leader here as " Recalcitrant.." for nothing. Once your Rambler is loaded and gone ..it's permanent.

Air freighting of cars is no problem with the right a/c configuration. All the F1 cars are air-freighted all around the world all the time, and all the non-UK cars for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, are brought in by Lufthansa cargo 747's, as part of the event sponsorship IIRC.

I agree, I would have expected the same thing.......you would have thought that it would have been arranged by them through Malaysia Air direct.....which does make me a little su****ious......

Here is a picture of the parade in 1957 with the "president" riding in the car
    [IMG]

I put the text under the picture into a language translator and came up with this:
"Leong yew Koh, YTM tun I Abdul merciful Putra and Datuk the commander of the hill gantang young hj. Abdul wahab Abdul great is paraded on the coloured carriage black the plate M4442 from the Remaining Stone Airfield to Klebang to berehat in the Tan Chang Lock house"

Don't worry, I won't send the car until the money is safe and sound in my account. Thanks for the addresses and the emb***y info.

Well maybe a little late but I pulled some info up that could be of interest.

chief of state: Paramount Ruler Tuanku SYED SIRAJUDDIN ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, the Raja of Perlis (since 12 December 2001)
head of government: Prime Minister ABDULLAH bin Ahmad Badawi (since 31 October 2003); Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed NAJIB bin Abdul Razak (since 7 January 2004

Wait there's more from Google/ Yahoo information sources.

The entire country is involved in promoting tourism and awareness of Malaysia. In addition, the Sultan of Kedah is celebrating his 79th birthday. He was Malaysia's 5th King after becoming a sovereign nation, and in keeping with the system of rotation - each of the 9 state sultans takes a turn at being King, he could potentially become Malaysia's 14th king too! he looked pretty spry and healthy...

I would have thought the CURRENT president wanted to recreate the event, not the SAME one from 1957.

Every government isn't like ours, and doesn't have the dough to do just about what they want. I have to say that a lot of cargo handled by the USAF is done through contracted carriers, and the USAF just doesn't handle certain things, sometimes by law. Using a USAF transport for something like this (if we were importing a car for a celebration) is one of those things. It's a celebration, but it's not exactly an official government item that a military transport could be dispatched for. Someone would be ringing the "fraud/waste/abuse bell" rather loudly! So the transportation would have to be contracted to a commercial carrier that could do it much more efficiently than military transport. Even if Malaysia's commercial airline is government backed there would still be problems.

I would suspect that someone from the Malaysian government would make some calls and streamline customs a bit though. Or is it a political or private party making the arrangements instead of the government? Sort of like the refurbishment of the Statue of Liberty -- that wasn't done with gov't funds either, and I think it was run by a private party -- or not a direct government en***y anyway.

As long as the wire goes through and is legit who cares? Once it's shipped out it's the carrier's and insurance company's problem if something happens.

Oh, I just retired (official as of 01 August!) from the USAF after 24 years. I was in Civil Engineering, but have had my share of loading cargo and shipping things world wide via military air!

I sent the car up to Detroit in mid July (of course after all of the funds had cleared!). I ended up hiring Emo Trans and they have been GREAT in helping me process all of the customs froms and other paperwork. Last I heard it was cleared at Chicago customs and inflight to Malaysia (that was when I left for the salt over two weeks ago). Once I get some photos from the parade and celebrations I will be sure to post them. It has definitely been a learning experience. At least I'll know who to call and who not to call when I need air transport!

    Thanks for the help guys!

Here are pictures of the car after arrival in Malaysia and its repaint with a nice news story:

    http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2007/8/18/central/18626258&sec=central

But I'm surprised they missed this little gem right in their own backyard:

    http://www.nashcarclub.org/nonmembr/51au_nm1.html

If they had been looking since 2003, they couldn't have been looking too hard......:D Heck, this one in Malaysia is already black.... could it be the ONE they were looking for?

Anyway, congrats to Chevygirlrox on her adventure with the car and the shipping arrangements. I'm glad it worked out!

Well, I guess it made it. It took nearly a month to get there! It was green when it left here but I knew it needed to be black. Turns out they only had 4 days to paint it! I knew customs was having problems because it was so old but I never thought they would hold it that long. I had also heard that various emb***ies were getting involved which they mention in the article. All for a Nash!

Thanks to Q for finding the article on the net.

Here are some pics from the celebration....

It wasn't $30,000 even with shipping. I'm not sure why they padded the number. The other number they mention at the end of the article, 171,575RM is equal to like $49,000 USD.
Here is also a video with the car in it...

It is government. Always got to make it sound good. At least you get some good press out of it. Maybe you can get a motor for them for whatever the other car they talk about is.

Those rear port hole type things on the one in Malaysia would be the dead giveaway. BUT the pictures I have of the car in '57 are too dark in the rear to see if they are present plus they could have been added since.

PS- Thanks Nick for the speedo, core on its way!

ChevyGirl that is a great story. I'm glad everything worked out for ya. I look at that car and I see Bonneville written all over it. Wouldn't you like to find one in that good of shape in the states? Thanks again for sharing.:) :D
