Hot Rods Help on Model A Axle Width

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by specsintexas, Apr 10, 2009.

  1. Need some help here. Anybody know what the correct track width (total number of inches from the right front brake backing plate to the left front brake backing plate) on a 1931 Ford Model A. Speedway sells axles in various widths. What is the correct width to use.

    Thanks

  2. I've got one out back ( not sure if it's a '31 persay) but I'll take a measurement for you in the morning.

  3. Thanks Cactus 1

You are talking apples and oranges ... :)

The axles are measured from the kingpin to the kingpin. NOT backing plates.
A lot of rodders use a 46 inch axle ... under Model A's.

I use a 48 inch under both of my 32's ... and as you can see ... the tires/rims are up under the fenders.

Also ... the type of brakes you run affect the total width of the axle. Early Ford drum brakes set the wheels inward a little more than MOST disc brake setups ... :)

  5. Kingpin centers look like 49 3/4". Spring perch centers 36" +/-
Flat part of backing plate under kingpin is 50 1/2"+/-.
    Hope this helps.

  6. Message to Deuce Roadster. Thanks for the axle info. By the way, keep that vicious dog of yours at bay. He/she looks like a real man killer. Thanks again.
