I'm looking at a possible project over in England and was wondering if anyone has any experience and advice to offer on the process and cost to get it shipped over here.

I'm not sure where specifically it is in England yet. But ideally it would come into Oakland or possibly Long Beach if better for some reason. It is drivable, so could road trip it back to the bay area if I have to, but the CA registration of it might be an extra hassle to do so as well.

The seller in England doesn't seem to know anything about how to do any of it on his end, so I'll have to arrange it all to make it happen.

It is an early 50's A40 Austin pickup, so shouldn't be any requirements for emissions stuff I hope.

Anybody got any thoughts on the process of doing this?

  4. There is a rolling 25-year limitation on whether the car must meet EPA and DOT standards for its build year (right now, it's 1986), so an early A40 Austin pickup will have zero problems in that respect, plus it's outside the goofy California rules, too. As far as registering it in CA, I can't address those points, but as long as the British paperwork is in order and everything is correct, the process at the port and Customs is pretty painless. I've imported two cars from Germany - one was American and the other British - and I had no problems at the port in Houston.

There are several reputable shippers in England that can help you out, and if you have someone in England that can assist you, obviously that is bonus points for you.

Sounds like a cool little pickup.

Thanks guys. Any ballpark estimates on how much the shipping might cost or customs expenses?

i used Kingstown to ship a deuce roadster into England....they arranged collection from the seller`s house in the U.S. ,cleared customs in NJ and shipped it over in a container, then arranged shipping to my door,...very reasonable rates and excellent people to deal with...very reputable company.

i've used Kingstown for around 22 years for somewhere in the region of 40-45 vehicles and i've never encountered a problem. My friends also use them.

I sold a 47 Ford coupe back in June to a fellow in England and he used a company in Ramona, CA that specializes in shipping to/from England. Try contacting Steve Mason,156 Maple St, Ramona, CA 92065. Phone is 760-994-6507. I recall it costing him somewhere in the area of $1500-1700.

Looks like the pickup is in the Yorkshire area. I'm guessing either Liverpool or London to ship it out of?

£3,500 seem like a decent deal for a typical good running stock model? Looks to be in reasonable shape with some bubbling on the lower door skins, etc. Quick repaint some years back and new wiring. Pretty good looking interior with what looks like original leather seats.

What are problem things to look for in these trucks? Will be just a simple driver and keep it mostly stock but pep up the motor some if possible.
