Hey guys, I can get a 265 v8 from a 55 bel air with powerglide still bolted on from a local guy up here in boston. The engine has apparently around 55 thousand miles and ran great when pulled(verified). It has all the stuff still on it, valve covers, filters, fan etc in good condition. I need help on what it's worth out there. Thanks, Lee
Hot Rod Garage here pulled that exact same setup out of a customers low mileage '55 Bel Air to make a gasser...I snagged it for $1500...
I sold a low milage (sitting inside for 35-40 years though) '55 265 for 500 plus around 300 for the shipping..about two years ago.
Scrap was up a couple weeks ago. I have a '55 265 and PG in the car and I don't think I could get $500 for the whole damned thing.
I bought a 35,000 mile 265 from a fellow HAMB member for $350 here on the HAMB. It supposedly sat under a bench for the last 35 years and was in really great condition. When I sent it out to get rebuilt they said it had probably over 100k on it with a .30 rebuild done at some point. You really never know unless you can hear and see it run. Now it's .125 over with a 097 solid lifer cam and '57 heads. It's being backed up by a '39 tranny and topped off by a Weiand 4 x 2 intake with 94's ran in a progressive setup. 265's are one of the raddest motors there are!!!
Pull the spark plugs, hook up oil pressure gauge and spin it over. If it's getting good oil pressure and good compression, it's worth a couple of hundred...........
1955 Chevrolet V8 265 are a LITTLE weird ... compared to the later V8's. They is NO oil filter pad on the block. They have front motor mounts only. They require a early camshaft ( or a modified later one ). They have a staggered valve cover bolt pattern. They are a little down on power when compared to the later engines ( that is WHY Chevrolet went to 283 ) The main value in them is to a 55 Chevrolet car restorer ... and they sometimes pay good $$$ for one with the right casting numbers and date codes. I would not give more than $250 for one ... unless I had a 55 Chevrolet needing a engine As for the PowerGlide ... it is cast iron and has a " different " shift pattern than the later models. I passed on one for FREE ... a month ago. I would not even load it up. No value to a rodder ( IMHO ) ... and there are plenty of the 55 guys who have ample supplies of them. No value ( $$$ ) to me
