Bring a tent and sleep on the salt... and get off the SHIFT key.

last year we got 6 guys together and rented an rv and stayed at the bend in the road. it came out to 500 bucks a piece for a weeks worth of fun. you could always throw up a tent or sleep in the back of your truck.
if it's a bed you're after, try getting a room in a town an hours drive away. or you can play the odds, piss off the people at the front desk and call every day hoping to catch a cancellation.

I am curious about the bend. Does it ever fill up? Does it cost to stay there?

The best tip you can get is to plan ahead for Bonneville.......At least a year or two

  6. Check some of the smaller towns like Wells NV. I got my room at a Motel 6 there a couple weeks ago.

Search for the hotels in Tooele, or Lakepoint UT its one hour drive. You can always stay in my house, like we have many guys do. Or you can wait till the week before and hope for cancellations in the hotels.

If I can help you out at all let me know.

There is no charge to camp at the "bend in the road." That's where a lot of the parties go on each night. Can be hard to sleep sometimes, but what the hell...

REMEMBER!! This year (2008) Dates have CHANGED!!
    Speed Week - August 18-24
    Inspections - Sunday Aug 18th

Inspections don't START until SUNDAY - as opposed to the usual Friday.
Runs will begin late Sunday and/or Monday morning.
(this shift in date is to try and relieve the load on rooms in Wendover)

Check here ... http://www.scta-bni.org./ ... for more information.

The rented motor home may be the best bet. Don't drive it on the salt if you don't have to. If the party noise is bothersome at the bend in the road, simply drive up the road a ways toward the mountain p***, or go over the p***. There is plenty of room, that dirt road goes to Montana.

Also.....there are a few little cabins over at the Wendover KOA. I forget the rental rates, but you have access to the showers. Cabins have AC, but they are horribly unconfortable. No bathrooms. This should be your last resort for lodging. See them on the Wendover KOA website.

I've been following this thread and want to thank everyone for the good suggestions. I've been searching the cities around and it looks like it will be a long haul everyday, and I envision my friends and I burnt to a crisp no matter our best precautions, driving back and forth about 3 hours everyday while we are there. Sounds like there are a lot of worries with the rental cars if you take them on the salt. So, let me ask this. I've become a big fan of riding buses when going to special events. Has anyone ever seen a bus service from Salt Lake City or Elko running fans out there and back each day? If the answer is yes and you can remember the bus line. let me know so I can get the info.

Yeah, I know, it ain't glitzy like driving your hammered deuce out there to Speed Mecca. But, I'm getting on and trying to be more practical in my old age. Heck, an enterprising van service could probably make a nice bit of change if something were set up where we could be picked up from designated hotels and delivered back.

Koa cabins are booked, only 7 of them there, I usually stay there but couldn't get one this year until wed. Will take a camp spot for the first few days.

In 1988 we waited at Motel 6 for a cancellation. They had a signup sheet and then everyone waited until the majic hour. With so many more people planning on going I don't know if that would work.
In 98 I stayed in my dome tent at the bend in the road. Thanks to the guys who chased my tent down when it decided to take off on it's own.
The truck shop has showers for a somewhat decent price. 5.00 in 1998 so you can figure it might be a bit more. They also had breakfast for a reasonable price.
One note: check the milage from some of the other towns as it may be a two hour drive for what looks like a short distance on the map. google maps says it is 109 miles from Elko Nv to Wendover, ut. that's more than I want to commute 3 or 4 days in a row. Wells Nv isn't quite so bad it is 59.5.

A lot of guys will leave after a few days. They set their record and leave or blow up and leave. Its kinda nerve racking to try to ride out cancellations but you usually can.

The drive from Tooele isn't bad at all, and you'll probably see a few hot rods driving out and back each day. I'd try to stay in Tooele if I were you. I'm making the drive several times and I live in SLC.

We have two race cars and are going back this year, all the motels and casinos are criminal in there pricing, they dont let you make reservations until the 7th of jan. by mid day,all rooms are rented and they have ****d the people willing to pay the rates, they are even charging a booking fee on top of their ******** rates. stay at the bend in the road, the truck stop at the overp***(about a mile from the bend) has real nice showers and they keep the ****ters at the bend clean, just try to use them before 8 hours of 110 degrees if you know what I mean.We take our travel trailer or motor home and its awesome,If you want luxuary, maybe you should re-think your destination, but if you want a kick-*** memoriable time and see something that words cant describe,man-up and get your *** out there.
Just my opion, with that and $3.50,you can get a gallon uf ****ty gas.
    Later,Phil.

you can throw a tent up at the bend in the road, go to the salt for the day, and come back to it. nobody messes with it. just be sure to stake it down. i was worried about the stakes pulling out the one day we had the wind delay. got back to it, tent still standing but there was another problem. i left the windows open, screens up, to air it out. there was a fine peppering of salt and dust, almost like talc all over everything. temps got down between 65-70 at night. perfect sleeping weather.
staying at the bend in the road, you're close to the magnesium fire, salt talk held a free cookout and i think hop up held a party one evening. if i can get the time off, i'll be back there camping again this year.

They dropped the casino rates this year to $80/day, vs the normal $109+/day, due to the date changes. The Salt Flats Cafe has the best breakfast for the $$, than the places in town.I'll sub- lease our shower stall for sleeping ( bring your own sleeping bag ) for $400/ nite?LOL.They ( Wendover west), should have rooms available after tue. I would think for around $60.Hop-Up usually has the freebe dinner? on monday nite, but who knows for this year with the date change. If you see a modified with the 42 on it, stop & say hi.

    lakes.
who do you need to talk to to get that rate? Im a member of landracing.com and no one on there has got a room in wendover for less then twice that price. all of the motels and casinos said the only rooms left were mini suites and that was what they told everyone. We have the 2727 car and the 357 car everyone is welcome to stop by and shoot the bull.

Here's the big racer's secret. At the truck stop on the freeway (Bonneville Exit) there is a great Mexican Restaurant. Order APPLE JUICE with your meal and you get BEER! I guess it's in a dry area.

Phil: ****, I just started dialing at 7am & at 7:15 I got thru & put on hold for 45 min. I got what was left ( smoking room ) for the $80/nite. I was shocked to say the least, as I have paid over $100 the last 3 times down there, but I was not going to argue. We are in Montego Bay again this year.Yah gotta get lucky once and awhile?. Look for #42 on my modified, towing a blue race bike & say hi & give me a cold beer, as we will probably need one by then. Sittin in line for over 4 hrs, one gets pretty dry.
    See you guy's there somewhere?.
