yeah, thats a plain old ford type solenoid used for many years, now what kind of switch on the dash?

 

Just a reg key switch. I will say after looking at picture, and what I had, I had run the one to coil via ballast resistor, to the start trigger side. So I have changed that to run on the I side.

You say it has been running for some time like it is. If the points were getting full 12 volts, could it be that the points have finally burned up? I can t say why, but some cars will only go 100 miles and burn points, and some will go much longer to burn points at full voltage.

It looks like your big main battery cable is being fed off the fuse panel. Thats a lot of amps going thru there. It should go straight to the battery, then feed the panel separately.

 

I do not think that coil will take 12 volts even with a resistor. Sorry I havent read the entire post , if you have good spark , please disregard. If no spark , buy a kit that replaces your old coil with a modern can coil and high tension lead , ( secondary voltage coil wire ) its relative cheap and a proper upgrade .
Where do you live? Someone local could help , I’m in palm bch Florida area .

 

After the motor spit & sputtered: the coil, condensor, ballast resistor, solonoid, was replaced with new. The points where replaced. Would you have a picture of the kit? Or show me where it is?

 

I will get a picture or part number .

With coils its not really about the volts, its the resistance built into the coil that brings down voltage to the points. It varies from one brand to another because the car mfr's all have they're own idea of how to do it. Some use a ceramic ballast like you have, and some use a resistor wire, and some do it in the coil. The bosch blue is for old VW bugs that did not use a ballast resistor,as its done inside the coil.

 

Personally, I like the look of the original coil. I send them to Skip Haney, they come back beautiful and have a very good reputation for durability. Then, you measure the OHMS at the coil and get the proper ballast.

Where did you get the coil that is on it now ? You said it was replaced . Condensers are also a problem now a days . I went through 3 just to get one good one . Even napa condensers are made off shore .

 

If that is a rebuilt coil and a tubman condenser, you’re good .
