I bought these 5 gauges and the 2 pod panel at a garage sale for $5 and want to use some of them. Was really happy to find the vacuum gauge. Anyway, the 270* sweep mechanical water temp gauge had the sending wire cut at the firewall. It looks like the wire is coated solid copper. My question is, can this large wire be soldered back together for a working repair? Would the sending unit be the same one for all of the different dial sweeps? I have another SW mechanical water temp with a cracked gl*** for a donor sending unit but it's a different sweep. My other question is about the date code on the vacuum gauge which I believe is W5. The info from http://www.roadsters.com/sw/#intro says this would be May 1953 or May 1977. I can't really tell difference between the "Big Block" and the "Small Block" since all of mine are the same. Can't read date code on any of the rest. It doesn't really matter to me, just trying to learn. Part of the pointer is painted black on the vacuum gauge, which I guess would make them all "Small Block"? OK, 1 more question, are electric sending units available or something interchangeable for the 90* sweep electric water temp and oil temp gauges? I could probaly search and find the last answer but guage experts might be reading this and save me some time that I can use in the garage. ~Mark
The temperture gauge guy can fix it for about $70.00. He did mine and it works great! Ray Martin...802-862-6374
I've had a gauge repair company in New Mexico repair many SW gauges. It is definitely worth the investment to repair early SW gauges. Call Mo-Ma Gauges at 505-766-6661. Great people and service. The FOGGER
i've had them do some gauges for me too , they did nice work on them. i kinda gulped at their qoute , but after checking around realized that they were reasonable compared to others. i believe i have seen a tech somewhere on fixing a mechanical temp gauge yourself , but in my opinion you are better off having a pro do it. your gauges are definitely worth saving
All of your gauges are small logo or small block and are pretty common stuff from the 70's. Probably not worth the investment to get it repaired, that temp gauge can be bought on Ebay for 25-30 dollars in working condition.
I just discovered they can be fixed with a donor gauge. Here's the post. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228272 and a link to the site with the info: http://www.ply33.com/Repair/tempgauge
