the resister is bypassed in start mode,is only to protect the points after the engine starts,it drops the voltage from 12 volts down to 8-9 volts so the points last longer,

 

pertronix sucks butt. Put the points back in. I had some, they grounded out and fried. Its a $20 fix to put it back the way it should be...
