ive had this idea brewing in my head and i think its time to share it with the rest of you and hopefully gain some support for it. not sure if its been dicussed before. i want to try to organize a HAMB fundraiser of sorts ispired by the amount of generosity and auctions my plan is this, to build a car to either sell or auction off on ebay with all the money going to Ryan. we try to get HAMBers to donate parts, cash, skill, time and whatever else they can. once we have all of the parts and anything else we need, we organize a HAMB thrash weekend event where we can all meet to put the car together, party, hangout and show off some rides (maybe even some drags?). i realize this is not something that can just happen overnight and its going to take some serious planning but i know that its possible, and most of us would be willing to make an effort to help the cause and to help Ryan. there are going to be more than a few things that are going to have to happen to make this work, probably going to need to vote on some things. first of we're going to have to choose a car to build my vote is for a model A coupe or Tudor or something similar 1. beacuse they are pretty basic and straightforward to build, and popular/easy to sell 2. beacuse i love model A's once that decision is made we are going to need to design the car and make a list of the parts we need setup a car fund of some sort to buy the parts people dont donate and to pay for odds and ends. find a location set a deadline/date etc. this is just an idea and i want to throw it out there to see how all of you respond, and i know there alot of things that need to be worked out could also donate a % of the proceeds to some charities so what do you guys think? give some input and ideas of your own share your concerns
I think it is a good idea but may be very hard to set up. I agree that we need to have a game plan. And yours sounds good to me. If we decide to do a model a I will donate what ever i have for a coupe or tudor.
I'm in for some cast aluminum parts. Flashy polished finned aluminum stuff could help with the e-Gay bidding Dennis
well we dont necessarily need to do a hamb thrash, just thought it would be more fun that way could probably find someone or a group who would be willing to receive parts and do the build, and maybe have a couple hamb thrashes to help out the builders. probably would be more feasible that way but not as fun.
man i thought this would have stirred up more controversy, guess there is less interest in doing something like this than i thought.
It's a noble idea. It really is. This is not the first time this idea has crossed paths with the HAMB. The problem is logistics and also time.
I nominate the dirty's to build this thing because they live by me and i would want to help and they seem to be able to build a car from scratch in about 7 and a half hours, give or take a few minutes...haha...
It would take planning, but it is a very generous and cool idea... here is my opinion; One group takes care of frame prep and suspension... relay it to the next stop where it gets either engine/tranny work done or body fitted... relay to next part of the country to those responsible for the next phase... etc. etc. This way everyone (well, a lot of us anyway) has an outside chance of helping with the car when/if it gets close to them. If you could get an interested party list, get all the members in close proximity to concentrate on one part of the build... I think it would work. I'm certainly in... and I'm in the middle of the country. I always love the idea of the HAMBdrags motor raffle.... this would just be 10 times better! And we could raffle it off at the drags... HAMBers ONLY????
two or three years ago a lot of HAMB folks made the trip to Bonneville, most for the first time. After it was over at least a dozen people got all fired up and were going to build salt flat cars. Realizing somewhat the cost and effort for such an undertaking I suggested a one car HAMB effort to pool our resourses and build a club car and try to set a record. Cool idea for the HAMB to hold a Bonneville record ,right? We would pick a relatively "soft" record and go for it. Should have been a piece of cake (relatively speaking), to take a couple of years and build a car. My idea was to use donated parts from HAMB members and shake the bushes for sponsorship for he rest. The car could have been passed off around the country so whoever had the talent for each phase of the build could join in the fun. Well, as they say " the best laid plans of mice and men", the thread disappeared by the end of the first day with only a couple of responces and was never heard from again. Now, 2+ years later I don't know of ONE Hamber bulding a Bonneville car (a couple had cars already), but maybe I'm just unaware of what is transpiring. The thing I DO know is that the enthusiasm died a quick death and I'm thinking it would be just more of the same in this situation. Lets hear some more thoughts. Frank
