So yesterday i responded to an add for a 1940 plymouth for sale.I get there the thing is buried in a small tight garage with **** all over it.So the dig began i was able to get half down body line when i relized this is not a 40 but a 42 or at least i thought so i have to get back to my shop so i tell the ower let me sleep on it .When i arrive home i posted an add askin what you guys think of that stye of car i believe its good to gey feed back and some of your ideas and pics.Well got up today owser calls he spent all day yesterday diggin this car out i run over right away only to find out its not a 42 either but its looks to be a 46 5 window cpe .I do like the body lines i just dont like the front .The car is missing motor ****** interior and grill but the body is like 90% rust free and everything else is there .The owner has dropped price from 1200 to 500 but the price cant be the deciding factor the car has to be so give me your imput .

these cars were never considered suitable for traditional hotrods

sounds like a good buy, but you will probably have a heckuva time finding a grille

That has a traditional early custom body style. Find a custom grill you like. 50' Plymouth grills look similar to Caddy grills and are real nice looking on a custom, plus they are cheap. I wish I can find a 40's coupe around here for 500. Buy it.

For that price, how could you go wrong? Buy it, build it to your liking, drive it, and don't be concerned about what anyone else thinks of it. Who cares? That could turn out to be a great ride.

Like was said before, those have cool lines and make a nice, 40's custom. You do have a lot of options with a grille too. If that body is solid then it woul dbe a cheap start to a nice custom. I love the 40's Dodge and Plymouth coupes. Great looking bodies in my opinion!!

Is it a Dodge or a Plymouth? Doesn't really matter either way they are nice, comfy, somewhat easy to build car. Neither Dodge or Plymouth stuff is overly rare around here, so locating a grill shouldn't be too hard. I wouldn't build a custom, but that's me. Small chryslers fit these like a glove if you offset them 1 1/2" to the p***enger side just like Chrysler did in all their V8 cars.

50 Plymouth grille would be nice, or a 46-47 Oldsmobile grille would suit that body style well.

I like the style of the '46 Dodge coupes.

The flow of the fenders into the doors and the roof line into the trunk is well designed. The problem I have with the grill is the front of the cars look so big. I would want to come up with something different up front but hey, this isn't a restorer's forum. ;)

I have one of these in my row of future projects so I may be alittle bias.

I don't remember saying ANYTHING about billet or clips in my response. If that's to imply my avatar is billet or street roddy in any way I would think your barking up the wrong tree. I was trying to impart some knowledge about engine swaps I learned 20 years ago doing mine.
Now back to clips, after you wobble around town at 45 or so for a year or two with the stock front suspension under this car with its bump steer, terrible camber curve and weird floating shock system, you might like to know that a MustangII cut right out of a donor car makes a damn fine front end under these cars and literally made my Plymouth into a daily driven car. Matter of fact, the ONLY car I owned or drove from '97 - '11 untill an accident messed things up. As for now, I'm on my way over to Elpolacko's joint to finish putting it's steering back together so I can rehang the front sheet metal and drive it another 150,000 miles or so. Have fun!

  15. You certainly can't get hurt at $500, you could sell the deck lid and s**** the rest without picking another piece off it and come out ahead. And despite what the traditional cop wet blanket in post #2 has to say, plenty of folks have built nice customs out of 46-48 Mopars, I've seen several of them featured in various magazines over the last few years.

Buy it, clean it up, put a drivetrain in it, and if you don't like it sell it. You get some carbuilding experience if nothing else.

But it's a good custom candidate!

If it's solid, grab it and chop it.

Buy it for 500 and re-sell it or part it out and go find your dream car...as far as hot rods or customs I think they look good either way...

taste is subjective, If you like the car and have a vision, go for it. I just sold a '47 3 window business coupe on the h.a.m.b. to another member a few months ago. As a former owner, IMHO they are unique looking, not ugly by any means, just different...

I did some research when I had mine and ran across this build to give you an idea of a chopped 5W with a custom grille:

40s Mopars aren't the king of the style parade but they can make a really nice ride as a mild custom or stocker with modern drivetrain. How a nice Rover V8 and drivetrain to follow it?

May not be "traditional" but they can look as cool as any late forties Ford.
