ok i just through a junkyard tranny in my car. its a 1950 chevy .the through baring was only a few few weeks old cause i just did the clutch before my tranny went out.ok so i no the barring is no good now because its holling when i push in the clutch.i must of pinched it . but heres where i need your help ? ok when i drove the car the first few times the tranny was quiet.but now when im in first or second gear the tranny seems really loud like a whinning or howling . but when its in third it is quiet like how it should be. so my question could the throw out barring be the noise in first and second . i think its the tranny myself because third is nice and quiet .but i would like another opinion before i pull the tranny again.so any help would be greatful thanxx kyle [IMG]

Noise would be coming from inside tranny. T/O bearing noise will only be heard when clutch is depressed. When clutch released noise goes away.......

My daily driver S10 has been doing that for about 50,000 miles since I did the clutch. It sounds like a little tweety bird in there. It seems to change pitch depending on the gear I am in. It's really noticable when your sitting at a red light. Soon as I touch the clutch pedal the noise stops, so that's what I do. Some times the squeak even goes away for a while, then it will come back.
    I'll just keep driving it!

when you have the tranny out check the front bearing on the input shaft. the one behind the front cover the throw-out bearing rides on. the bearing is just along for the ride when in high gear, in the other gears it has side play since the input gear is transfering torque thru the cluster gear. in high gear it is coupled directly to the main shaft thru the sncho, no side thrust on the input shaft bearing.
