I need some help here guys I am building a truck with a straight axle and I am trying to use the old wish bones, (radius rods). Well the spindles and tie rods are to high. What should I do Is it OK to bend with heat will this effect it in any way We are talking about steering!!! Thank you for looking and PLEASE HELP ME!?!?!?!
What year is the axle, wishbone, and spindles? And yes they can be heated and bent safely if done correctly.
The axle is a 4 inch drop supper bell the spindles are like 75ish disk brakes and the wish bones are 29 model A
NO NO NO its the tie rods hitting the wish bones because the way the spindles and the tie rods connect
If you have bolt on steering arms you can buy the drop tie arms usually the new axles are formed to avoid the problem when original axles were heated and dropped the arms were heateed with a largetip to a cherry red then bent usually in two places to get the taper end in the right angle too cold and they can crack. too hot and you lose strength usually the A wish bone will not give you enough castor angle you might have to do a v cut and reweld to get the 4 to 6 degrees to get it to handle right
I had that problem back in 58. In those days heating and bending the steering arms was the only solution. Today, I would used deep drop steering arms fro Chassis Engineering. These work with 37-48 Ford spindles. The spindles are the forging with the steering arms and stub axle. It sounds like you have a disc brake conversion on your spindles. Depending on how your disc brake clalipers are mounted you will need on of two versions of deep drop steering arms offered by CE.
