I have a chance to pick up a 1990 Caprice Classic with a tranny issue. The car is in decent shape, although I really only want it for the drive line. The problem is when the car is up to operating temp, the converter locks up which makes getting up to speed a chore as well as it fighting against itself under braking. It seems to lock up after the 1-2 shift at about 12-15 mph. I'm thinking it has something to do with the govenor, as I don't think there are any electronics on the tranny. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, what kind is it? It is a 200-4R I suspect, but could be a 700-R4 also. 3 speed with O/D.
i'd bet it's a 700-r4 and that it's got either a faulty lockup switch or sensor. you can just find the lockup wire and cut it and with no power to it, no lockup. not great for longevity but it's a simple fix to allow you to drive it until you can fix the problem. i'll get out my hydramatic book and see if i can find any more specific info for you in there.
another thing i just thought of, check the governor to make sure it's not sticking. i'm still working on the location of the solenoid for the converter clutch.
change the fluid and filter, lockup selonoid and pressure switch all together.(it's all in the pan) It's cheap and you'll be done in under an hour. That will likely solve your problem or at least eliminate the most probable issues.
That thought had crossed my mind, but it needs to go SC to PA and that just won't happen with no converter lock up. Well not with out a gas stop every 2 hours. Thanks for all the help guys.
If you just cut the wire two thing can (will) happen. If sel is stuck it won't change a thing. If it never comes on it WILL burn up gear train on first long trip from lack of lube flow. The best thing to do is to fix it right .
