Guys, Was talking to Ryan the other night about my 29 "A" build. It has been stalled for quite a while. I am not a builder, I know what I like and am pretty good at collecting parts.
I now have the majority of parts I need. Ryan suggest a "Help Wanted" thread. As he is O.K with it I will give this a shot. First of all this is not a HAMB Chop or other. It is just trying to get help that can do some welding/fab work for me to make this collection of parts into at least a roller. I do my own wiring and have a friend who will build me a log intake and header for the mill. So if any would like to volunteer to help me make this build come true I would sure appreciate what ever help I can get. I am not a "gold chainer" and there is no high dollar parts on this one. I love to cook so I can offer some good chow to fuel any who would like to help. I will also provide drinks and figure some way to get a port - a - potty .

So here is a list of the parts I have collected for my "29" -

    (1) Body - hand built '29 "A" RPU body. It was the prototype by my friend Bill in Colorado (he then built 5 other bodies that he sold. The body is stretched leg room and has hidden hinges with bear claw latches. One thing I would like to fix on the body is the fixed posts for glue-in windshield. Any on got any 28-29 roadsters w/s parts ?
    (2) Frame is a double Z'd frame from Riley Auto of Colorado.
    (3) Front axle is '41 Ford drilled with holes (Thanks again "Hip !). The rear is a '41 Ford coverted to open drive. The axles are to be located with hairpins. The brakes are '39 Ford front and rear with wide five wheels.
    (4) Sigh, the down side . . . . The mill is a '88 Ford Mustang 2.3 4-banger(what I had) - sorry. The trans is a 5 speed out of a newer T-Bird (thanks "sgtlethargic").
    (5) That's about it. I do have a modified headlght bar (Thanks "popawolf" !) Headlights are a pair of Guide with the parking lights on top. Going to run "A" shell and hood. Probably early Mustang radiator. The gas tank is early 30's GM - (Chevy is possible).
    (6) Steering is to be cowl mounted. Can't afford a sprint car box. Looking for the Mopar boxes that are from late 60's - I think.

Guess that's about it for now. PM me if you would like to help out or just to talk.

Thanks Ryan and the HAMB !

It sounds like you have a good plan going. I can agree 100% with the run what you have for an engine in one of these rather than spending mega bux to please others. It should be a fun little roadster to blast around in when you have it up and running.

I'm not sure really what you are asking here...Do you just need some one to finish weld parts? Or general help? Why don't you learn to weld yourself? Or are you not mechanically inclined and looking to hang and have fun time, make friends and build a cool car? Do you just need some someone to come by and give some direction? I don't mean to put you in the spot light. It's just not clear to me....and it might help to clarify so you can find the help you are looking for.

Btw sounds like the start to a cool build. I'd come help make a mistake or two if I was closer.;) Good luck.

Too true. Also, I might add it seems that a fair amount of the cars built "back in the day" had a few different mills in them. so run what you got. change it later if you don't like it.

Hitchhiker, That for the suggestion for clarification. It is as you surmised . . . I am not mechanically inclined. I don't weld but I do understand the necessity of proper welding to keep a vehicle safe. I can use any help I can get but really need someone to do the welding and fab work as required.

Hitchhiker, Missed your offer to help make a mistake or two. I sure know mine would be more than a few mistakes.

Nothing wrong with knowing your limitations. How about some pictures of the parts? you know...for inspiration.

Dave, I think this is a pretty good idea. I'd be willing to get together for a "Fab Fest" or something of that nature.

A few things come to mind. You need a place/time set. As well, I'm thinking you need to have some materials for motor/trans, suspension, and body mounts and and idea of how you want it set up.

Of course there's always stuff that comes up to bite you in the rear even with the best made plans. I'm re-learning that with every build/project I've ever had. :D

I'd be more than willing to help get you prepared for a day where a bunch of us go "all-out" and get it into being a roller. It's not that hard if you do a bunch of the ground-work ahead of time.

Brent, You posted quite a few good ideas. I was hoping that we could use my gargage as it has several 220/110 outlets. Could you suggest a list of materials ? I know plate and other materials. What thickness plate ?

Haha, dude... just send them over to me.

Good, you've got a place. As far as materials, it depends on what needs to be done. Send me over the pics... let's all see what you're working with.

Here are some photos of Dave's project. I think a Modified Fab Fest is in order, for sure.

  18. They come inaluminum and steel. I forget how long they made them but we spent a day in a yard looking and I think the same box was used into the 70s. The Aluminum 60s one is easy to find, we have a Mopar yard here if you need help.

Tman, Thanks for your input. My research on these boxes is as follows. This encomp***es any Dodge or Chrsyler product from 1965 yo 1979. They were made in both aluminum and in steel. You would think that with this amount of cars made they would be easy finds in local yards.

Nothing wrong with the small block Ford.If you're worried about it,just fit a full hood.

Mark, Thanks for the response. Sorry about the confusion. I said I had a '88 motor but did not specify. It is the 2.3 4-banger out of a '80s Mustang. Will have a fabricated log intake with two one bbl Holley carbs. Exhaust is the old sprint car style along the side of the body.
Need to check back with your build to see how you are doing.

Is that the later version of the 'Pinto' engine?Pretty popular over here (due to the fuel prices!),though ours only went up to 2 ltr.Plenty of tuning parts for them too.
Haven't touched mine for a couple of months as I'm renovating my new workshop.Full steam ahead when it's finished!

Oh, I like it better with the 4-banger.

Dave, have you considered shortening the frame at the rear (before the kick-up)?

  25. Sounds like you have a great start for your rod. The 4 cyl Ford & 5spd is a great choice.
Should work well with that set up.
I'm sure you'll find the help you need on here.
    Good luck.

  26. I had one of those for my T. Great engine in a little car. The V8 thing got to me tho and I sold it.

  27. I would be more than willing to lend you a hand. But alas I am half way across the country. If you can figure a way for me to help you with the build I will be more than happy to lend a hand.

And damn I gave a late 60s MOPAR box away a year or so back to a muscle car guy up north for a spare. But a suitable box couldn't be that hard to come by. I have a volvo box convertted to cowl steer for my roadster. I think they are common in the junk yard.

Anyway other than living in exile half way across the country i would be glad to help if there is any way that I can.

That's pretty cool. I've been tossing around using one of those. You can build a pretty bad little motor if you want to. They have a lot of aftermarket support because they are used in a few racing cl***es. apparently they are capable of 250-300 N/A and like to rev. they have fairly strong bottom ends too from what I here.

Brent, I was also looking at the dead air space . . . Was thinking about a small trunk for tool bag and small stuff.

Seesko, Thanks so much for your comments.

Porkn******, What can you tell me about the volvo box ? I imagine it is compact. Is it hard to convert to col steering ?
