I am trying to find out information on these hubcaps for a good friend that is not here on the HAMB. I am also looking for two more so he can run them on his roadster. I will put a wanted ad up as well. But I figured with the power of the HAMB I would put them up on the main board and see what I could come up with here first. We are thinking that they are some cheesy Ford ripoff reproduction like from J.C. Whitney or one of those other aftermarket parts houses from back in the day. If any one can shed some light on this mystery we would appreciate it immensely. Better yet if you have 2 more that you have no need for I would like to acquire them for my buddy. They would be going on a top notch 29 roadster. Thank you ahead of time for helping out!!! (Note: These are stainless steel and not chromed steel)
Early reproduction '41 Ford caps. Aftermarket replacements that weren't licensed to use the Ford logo.
Yep.........he's correct. Hopefully someone out there has a couple more to match them. Otherwise, I believe new re-pops with the correct Ford script are available.
I looked for the ones you are talking about and could not find them. He has a set of 2 lyons caps that I saw but I could not find the one that you speak of. A link?
Ok, I saw that link. Those are sold. My buddy is looking for two of the same as pictured since he has two. Thanks for trying. I will keep this alive awhile longer than move it over to the the parts wanted section.
I had a set just like that a few years ago with the French curve instead of the "Ford". Exactly like the Reg Schlemmer roadster from the first cover of Hot Rod magazine. So we know they were around circa 1948. There's a closeup of the car in the "Birth of Hot Rodding" book. Sold the set to a guy in Europe for big bucks.
Alchemy, He contacted me but I thought he was talking about the other weird style. Did you sell him the exact same ones I am looking for? He said he has some that need rechromed. He's in Sweden.
As far as I can remember, they are exactly the same. I don't think too many companies would make French curve logoed hubcaps. I bet the original chrome was as cheap as it gets.
It's funny in the 60s you couldn't give them away. We were always told that they were Argentina repos used to keep the old cars down there on the road. In the 60s repo parts were mostly junk from off shore. These were examples of them. Now they bring back memories of the old days and are sought out. It will be pure luck finding a nice pair.
I might also add that the ones posted in the pics are stainless steel and not chromed, I just found that out this morning. I remember seeing caps like this years ago at the swapmeets and nobody wanted them then. I guess they have to become scarce and novel to be desirable now. If I find them for him fine but I'm not going to the end of the world to get them. He has plenty of other options to run on his car. Thanks for all the help so far.
I just sall one of these today at a Swapmeet. Don't know if it will still be there tomorrow. I can pick it up for you if you want it. Fryguy
