I want to use my original 28 Model A upper firewall with a smooth Brookville cowl cover. It looks like the upper firewall is spot welded in, is this correct? How do i remove just the upper firewall without damaging it?

I think the upper firewall is the gas tank on a 28/29. HRP

  3. i believe the upper firewall is spot welded in. it is a separate piece from the gas tank. i do prefer the look of the stock upper firewall

You are both right. The Briggs body style is what 36-3 Window is describing and every other 28 29 is what HRP is talking about. Which one do you have. You can tell by the cowls. The Briggs body for 29 resembles the 30 31 cowl. the others look like the Model T cowl from 26 27.

The 28-29 tank did not go all of the way to the firewall, there is about 1 1/4" between them. It is spotwelded in. I have replaced a couple of them. Takes alittle bit of careful grinding to make them look good when done. I usually use a 1/2" wide half round file to get the contour right so the welds can not be seen. Rod

Do I need a certain kind of spot weld cutter or can I just use a regular drill bit?

I used a spot weld cutter. I would imagine a 5/16" drill bit would do just as well. As a word of caution, some of the Ford spotwelds seem more like a dragweld and will be oval in shape, not round. Rod
