THe Master cylinder on my 57 pontiac is shot. So I figured its a good excuse to upgrade to discs on the front. How do I choose what type of new master cylinder to buy? I've read I'll need somethin with probably a 9-inch booster. Thanks for the help.
i'm not sure if pontiac and chevy used the same m/c, but i used a 68 chevelle manual m/c (disc/drum) on my 55 chevy. with the "standard" disc brake kit, it works great. no need for a power booster.
No point and re-inventing the wheel (pun intended), I say, Select a master cylinder that came with the car that the discs you are going to use. That way all you have to do is hook it up, the engineering has been done for you. I put a rear axle out of a Mazda truck under my '29 chevy. I took the master cylinder with booster and the front disc brakes off the same mazda and converted my truck. In the Mazda the mc was on the firewall, I mounted it undr the floor. Works great. ..
Do you have power brakes now if so than thats all under the dash. If manual it's on the framerail and getting a booster/mc setup is going to be a tight fit either way to use a 9" booster.
Found this as a reference. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/...ds_Pont_suspension_upgrade#Disc_brake_upgrade so a vette MC should fit the bill
I have a 57 Pontiac with the under floor booster/master cylinder which I have decided to ditch. I went with a universal street rod pedal, dual master cylinder with an 8-inch power booster mounted on the firewall, where it should be. Its going where the stock heater box /wiring harness went through so it does involve some heavy mods. Disc brakes came from Master Power Brakes, stock rear drums. How does it work? Don't know yet, still mid project. Look at the pics in my profile and you will see where I am at. If you want more pics I can send some, I did figure out how to use the stock pedal which says "BRAKE" and looks cool, so this makes me happy. Good luck
