Help! Noob here! I just bought a 351W out of a 84 Ford F150 (I'm told). Someone did a real hack job when they removed it and now I can't figure out what wires go where. First, it's got the magnetic pickup in the distributor. How in the world does that hook up? Thanks

It hooks to the ignition control box mounted on the rh inner fender wall of that truck. If you don't have an engine harness, you might be replacing this with after market stuff.
Also note that 351 W have a unique firing order, unless somebody threw in a 302 cam, then you need that firing order.

  3. if you don't have the Ford ignition control box , you can use a MSD box to make it work. the wiring instructions comes with it

Go to your local parts store order a distributter for a 69 mustang 351 W, Set ya back about $50.00 comes w/new points and condener.

  5. Well, an 84 Pickup should have a Duraspark ignition, which means you need the Duraspark box. There should be 3 wires coming out of the Dist, purple, black, and orange that go to the box. It also uses a special TFI coil.

Disnt the winsor and 302 share the same firing order some years? Used to have a 5.0 mustang that my uncle swaped the wires around to 351 windsor firing order and than argued that it was a windsor. Cant tell him anything.

  7. The ford 302 (5.0) went to the 351W (Windsor) firing order in 1985 on the roller cam HO motors.

I had awful luck with the duraspark boxes shitting the bed. They don't like the heat or wet. Go get yourself a nice MSD 6A for $25 bucks at the next swap meet ;)

What is the firing order for a 351 W ? All years the same? Also, anyone have the wiring diagram for the MSD 6A for use with the Windsor?
    Thanks

  11. I replaced the duraspark box with a HEI 4 pin module that I mounted under the dash. The dizzy looks factory.

Wow! Thanks alot especially for the immediate responses. Wow!! I guess I am going to go with an aftermarket ignition module, probably the MSD 6AL. So should I go ahead and get a new distributor?

The Duraspark distributer will work fine. Better than points.

Do yourself a favor and DON'T go back to points. Thats like going from XBOX to Caleco Vision. Keep the stock dizzy and run an MSD. The 6A is cheaper than the 6AL. Only difference is the 6AL has a rev limiter. 6A's might even be available at the 'Zone, as i know they stock some MSD. I've had an MSD in my race car for 5 years, and in my friends mustang for almost 10. Simple wiring, and great detailed instruction. Good Luck!

  19. as stated before, late 302's (85 and newer roller cam HO) used the 351 firing order.
