I will be the first to admit that when it comes to front ends i come up pretty short in the knowledge department. I really want to keep a majority of the original front end that was used when it was a drag car in the 60's etc on it however i want Disc brakes on it. Its not really about the cash problem for a set of brakes but what really are my options to keep the factory axle and maybe go with a different spindle with a hub for 5 bolt wheel instead of the spindle mount wheel. I want a good set of disc brakes on the front. Is there anyone on this board that would sell a kit that i need i would love to put some cash in a fellow H.A.M.B ers pocket Heres a picture of the drivers side front.
i have no disc brake idea but may you can find something here www.martsrods.com Another good thing is that old veedub wide 5 drumms are nearly a bolt on swap , same bearingsin the drumm ,requires no hub, and only minor backinplate (bolt circle) changes are required to make them fit ,so if they work a vw wide 5 (may others too) disccbrake kit will also be a easy swap
There is more interchangeability with solid axel king pins and spindels than most people realize. Locate a machinist friend and compare to 1940 ford spindles. and kingpins. If ford units will work you are home free. Good luck!
As per on Mart's site there are a few options using parts from UK cars from the 60's and 70's but availability over there will be your limiting factor. Basically if you can get hold of a pair of 60's Ford Anglia 105E hubs then there's a whole range of Ford discs you can use on the hub. You use the standard 103E/E93A/Pop/Prefect/Anglia wheel bearings with a small spacer, I think it's 4mm (.16") on the inner bearing. Then just pick a caliper of your choice and make up a bracket. Common setups are Sierra discs and calipers, Mk1/2/3 Fiesta and Mk2 Cortina. You'll end up with a standard small Ford 4x4" stud pattern though, not the wide 5 that was only on this car. Your choice of standard 15" steel wheels are only Austin Devon I think, but you might be able to knock a centre out of another wheel and make something up. There are literally hundreds of aftermarket wheels in that stud pattern though. I have no idea if any American Fords used that pattern but all UK Fords have it from about 1961 onward. If you need kingpins and bushes then you can get a set from www.smallfordspares.co.uk
Wilwood and Aerospace both make them to bolt on to your Anglia/Prefect spindles. Do you want to sell those extra doors?
