Technical Help with Powerglide

Anyone know how to access the Governor on an aluminum powerglide?

 

sure, remove the tail housing, it's right there on the output shaft, where it belongs. Like a Ford or Mopar.

 

Thank you is it possible to do while still in the car? Trying to figure out why it’s not shifting into second. And this is the next step after the modulator.

 

Might depend on the car that it's in. On a job like that, I'd consult the factory shop manual for the car. But if it's installed in something not original, I'd have to do some looking and reading first.

Been a long time since I took one of those apart. But I took a torqueflite apart this morning, and as I said it has as similar governor. Usually it will come out if you remove the driveshaft, crossmember, tail housing, and speedo gear. Then remove the clip on one end of the governor pin, and take stuff out. Might have some snap rings holding it in, too.

(edit: no need to remove the speedo gear unless you want to remove the gov housing)

Did you set the TV linkage (throttle valve)?

 

Have you tried to manually shift it ? Check the modulator make sure the vacuum hose is hooked up.

 

Yes I’ve been driving it for a year now with just some slipping into second but now it just constantly slips when trying go into second. If I drive in low and drop it into drive it’ll shift into second when I let off the gas but will immediately slip again if any pressure is applied to the gas. Vacuum line is good.

 

Probably lost the high gear clutch, or maybe the sealing ring surface in the drum.

 

It is not the governor so don't waste your time pulling it apart . Just pull it out. Or drive it in low .

 

Does it have reverse?

 

Yes reverse works

 

Try backing it up a hill. That is, if you want to further delay the dis***embly process.
