Do the people with the plasma cutter not have someone who can program CAD? A step notch should be super basic for someone with experience. Just take them some basic measurements or even a cardboard cut out of what you want and they should be able to program it in short order.

Do you have a napkin sketch or image of what you want replicated?

What we don't need to do then is improve your computer skills, we need to remind you that in the traditional method they used pencil and paper to communicate. Believe you me it still works. However, if you discover the computer is a tool to be used, you discover all kinds of stuff to learn from.

Yeah, I'm going to disagree. While most of them do, and anyone can (even I have a cad program) , that doesn't make you experienced enough to do more then muddle thru it being my experience. That "short order" is all about the application of knowledge and common sense in using the tools one has. After all, he has to turn on the computer, log in, open the program, open a file, decide if you need a template or going to free hand it offering information into the computer. How many fingers they type with... Most say an hour for that magic of file generation just because it cover the guy taking the order and the walk to deliver it. And we all know what that hour is worth, lots.

Sounds like you need to visit the librarian. Not only to improve your computer skills, but to discover they most likely have those programs available to learn with.

No one who has any proficiency in CAD is taking an hour to program a step notch. All the nonsense of turning on the computer and logging in etc all has to be done to run the plasma cutter so adds nothing to the time already required.

I am very proficient in CAD (cardboard aided design). Can’t you use scissors and a sharpie to do the design, then an angle iron straightedge and a torch to do the cutting?

StamCo, 780-436-2647 give them a call. Argue with them. GT Metals, 780 434-8721. Compare. Fact is unless you have a CAD file on disc in the format they require for their system to communicate, it's going to cost you. They maybe have one from a previous customer on file, or because the guy on the drafting side is aware of what's being asked, but still, drafting time spent is money being spent. And no, the guy who draws isn't often the guy on the tools. But let us know what you find out?

That right there is a reason for my saying, I admire you taking good advice and with it posting a picture, but you could have spent a bit more time executing on the art work before doing so. Come on. You telling me that's the sketch you want to hand in?

You want to remember a few thing about drawing and one that I missed doing this was darkening my object. Adding a ***le block and some additional detail on material maybe. I used the lines as a scale, folder for a ruler and a pencil.

And save yourself and that overworked teacher the work.

There is a thread in theOT section with Project Truck in the ***le.
He just did a step notch on his truck. @guthriesmith is the member.
I doubt his CAD file will be perfect for your use sincew there are a number of different programs, but should give you a better idea of what to design.

This has nothing to do with what a business would charge to do the work. You said it would take an hour and it certainly wouldn't which has clearly been shown by the fact that it took far less than that for a member here to get a notification that measurements had been posted, come here and get those measurements, create a CAD file, zip it and attach it here. Instead of always trying to be a know it all on here maybe you should actually read what people write rather than just blather on about things that have no relevance to what is being talked about.
