I got a 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe that is stock. The problem is recently while driving it has been poping out of 3rd gear while driving. It started doing this out of now where. It is a 3 on the column. Any help would be appreciated on where should I start looking.
First, make sure the shift linkage shift rods are adjusted correctly and that the shift arm on the trans fully engages third gear. If that is okay, and it is jumping out of gear on deceleration, that is usuallty a sign of synchronizer wear and/or other internal wear problems.
Would that happen just out of the blue? It was all good then I drove it today and it was doing it while driving and as soon I shifted into 3rd while giving it gas it would pop out. I'll check my linkages tomorrow. Thanks
good to add that info; If it never jumped before, and you have had the car a while to know that, then it might be a linkage problem. If it jumps out a lot, that is when the small inner teeth on the input will get angled wear. That wear will make it jump no matter what you adjust. so, try to get the linkage checked out before driving it more.
From your description, that it popped out on acceleration, what I suspect is that the shift linkage is out of adjustment. It's been a long time since I had a "40 Chev (but I have had a couple of them) but I feel certain there is an adjustment "block" or clamp, probably at the shift levers on the column, that is loose and has slipped. If that is the case, it is an easy fix. Get both trans levers in neutral, then adjust the column levers to be even and so that the shift lever (at the steering wheel) smoothly moves back and forth in the neutral position. Tighten the clamps, then make sure the trans lever for third gear is fully shifted into gear. edit: I gotta get my thinkin' and typin' going a little faster
