I am restoring a 64 Impala ss that I received in parts from 2 other guys who had started this and quit. does anyone know what holds the windshield and back glass moldings on. There are no studs for clips or screw holes for clips either. I'm not sure if I need liquid butyl or if the chrome snaps in or over the rubber. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
my 61 has studs to hold the clips on. Might be that someone cut them off? If there are moldings, then something needs to hold them on, so it should have studs or holes, and you need clips. Regardless if it's a rubber seal (which it should be) or butyl tape (which they started using on full size cars in 65)
their is studs for the clips to hold the chrome on. Studs are where the rubber is at look down at the rubber and you will see them on the bottom of the rubber if they are gone I don't know how you'll hold the chrome on. fyi most of the time the clips are put on before the windshield is put in... hope this helps
The car has no studs or grind marks where studs used to be or holes for screw in clips. This is the only car I've done that has neither of the two. If someone is an Impala expert I would like to see some pics.
Between the rubber seal and the metal of the glass opening there will be "CLIPS" that the trim "snaps" onto . Its hard to describe and I have no way of getting you a picture but an "L" shape piece of metal, with a "U" shaped bottom pushes onto the thin metal (the inner and outer sheet metal of the window opening that is spot welded together) of the opening and then the rubber seal goes over those, and while they stick up/protrude the chrome trim can attach onto them.
the lower windshield trim clips screw onto the body and the chrome slides onto it. I am googling some pics, but can't find what i need to show you....
What holds the clips to the car? I soda blasted this car to the bare metal and there are no holes whatsoever in the openings.
After rereading you first post I think I see what you are saying. I will look when I get to the shop in the morning. Thanks for the info.
The clip itself pushes onto the "lip" of the body/windshield opening and is held on with litte "teeth" that are built INTO the clip (the "U" shaped portion I mentioned). The other end (the "L" shaped portion I mentioned) is what sticks above the rubber seal, and the trim snaps onto.
