Here is what I have. 392 Wilcap adapter to Lakewood Scattershield and an A-833. I have a stock starter thats has been a modified a little by the PO to make it fit. I have read that a lot of people switch to the Dodge Dakota mini starter. Is that a mini starter stock off the shelf at your parts store? What would be the diameter difference from stock? And would you have to change your flywheel tooth count?

Not sure about your particular pieces, but most likely the tooth count is different. I have a "late model" starter on my 392 and it was modified significantly - nose as well as pinion drive gear.

So bottom line - you can adapt the later starter regardless of your tooth count, but it might get pricey IF you have to "store buy" one. I found a used one off ebay - simply because it saved me time and was cheap - otherwise I would have attempted to modify a late model starter.

BTW when you do a search on Ebay - you will see a TON of late model starters that state they fit a 392 - THAT is a tad misleading - they'll fit WITH the right combination of OTHER PARTS - they are not a drop in replacement as the ads suggest.

EDIT: The Late Model Chrysler Starter has an asymmetric bolt pattern with regards to the register compared that to the stock Hemi Starter that is (or at least appears to be) symmetrical.

    YMMV

The starter application would be late 80's through mid 90's Dodge Dakota or Ram with a 318. They will work with either a 130 tooth (which you have) or a 143 tooth flywheel. (big block)

TR Waters, Learn something everyday - I didn't realize those years interchange. Thanks!!!

BTW - You STILL need to be careful when buying them - I see them all the time with the asymmetrical pattern being advertised as "drop in" replacements on a 392. I use that style on my dragster, but sure won't fit on my stockers. Now these ones that Tr Waters has mentioned - THOSE sound interesting. Are those gear reduction starters?
