I was wondering if any of you guys had any links to Hemi related websites? I've already looked at hothemiheads.com and was trying to find other sites like that relating to hemi parts, troubleshooting, and whatnot...
Specifically I only have a 331 and a 354, but I might get my hands on a couple others down the road, one being a 330 Desoto...but I'm interested mostly in sites dealing with NOS, new and repro parts such as trans adapters, oil pumps, rebuild kits and so on...I know allpar.com has the history and background, and I guess troubleshooting can be taken care of here when the time comes...
Ive been chasing parts for my 331 for a year now. Ill post up all my links that I have at home later today, if none else beats me to it. Carefull with those hemis man, theyre addicting, and drain your bank account like no other. Do you have any pics of your pair?
My digital camera took a dump on me a month or so ago, so no pics...and I hear ya on draining the bank account since I just started looking for other motors lately and have come across about 4 motors locally, each for under $350 bucks...in the next 2 months it's quite possible I could have two 331's, a 354 and a 330...the last two still run, and both 331's are "stuck" which I've dealt with before on many different occasions with other motors, mostly B/RB mopars...
Oh, see...that's exactly why I asked this "stupid" question...I forgot all about Egge...thanks, I'll go check em out right now...
PAW has adapters and also parts for the Chryslers. The 330 will be the most expensive and difficult to get parts for.
I've been gathering bits for my '58 truck 354. Hot Heads and PAW probably have the most (and biggest variety) of parts. Here are some more: http://www.roadsters.com/hemi/#Sites
Ok, now here's another stupid question...I have a line on an industrial 354...are these internally the same except for cam and possibly crank/rods? What would it take to get one of these to stock/slightly modified specs of the same year production hemi?
Buy this book: http://cgi.ebay.com/The-Complete-Chrysler-Hemi-Engine-Manual_W0QQitemZ4627343023QQcategoryZ378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This Tex Smith book will tell you differences in the motors you're looking at as well as many specs, a few pages of retailers, rebuild stuff, etc. etc. Worth it!! You will need it for sure!!
****, for 13 bucks including shipping, consider it bought...but I'm still curious about the 354 industrial engine, is it worth picking up for 300 bucks even if it sits around for a year or two before I have a use for swapping the internals? I know the valvetrain is adjustable on the Industrials, since the valve covers have bumps in them to accomodate this, but I just want to make sure it can be converted before buying a $300 paperweight for the garage...
My knowledge is from the Dodge industrials. They have p***. castings but small valves. The exhaust will probably be sodium filled and have 7/16 stems. Some new valves ,seats, and guides will fix. The rockers are probably not adjustable. They changed the tooling and all got bumped covers from then on. I would get it.
http://www.rodandcustommachines.com/rcmmain.html Mostly early hemi stuff. Wait, is there another hemi?
Yes! Get it! I heard that not all Industrial motors have the adjustable rockers even if they have the "bumped" covers. Keep that in mind. The adjustable rockers trains would be nice to have. If you don't want it, tell me where it is and I'll go pick it up! That book will cover the major differences in that Industrial motor. The biggy is how the water flows I think. I'm sure someone can elaborate on that. I don't remember what I read. I think there is something with the camshaft end also.
Alright, here goes: not all are HAMB friendly, but it's all of the HEMI research I've done, besides all of the posts here on the HAMB http://www.cnc-motorsports.com/default.asp - best prices for pistons n such ive heard http://www.bigalstoybox.com/ http://www.sweptline.com/tech/engine4.html http://www.msnusers.com/Paulsprojects/331354392chryslerhemi.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=95 http://www.project33.com/category.cfm?Category=Engine http://hotrodsandhemis.com/Specifications.html http://www.televar.com/rskala/ron.htm http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/hemi-c.htm http://www.rodandcustommachines.com/ http://www.tdperformance.com/ http://hotrodsandhemis.com/ http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/hey-willys36-tell-me-about-your-hemi-2903.html http://www.imagineinjection.com/ http://www.hothemiheads.com/ http://www.clubhotrod.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=42 Try those out.
You need to change the cam to an automotive one. You can change to car heads 354/'55 331 will work fine!
I won't mind having it sit around the shop until I can find some car heads...I'll pick em both up then if the guy still has em...so that would bring my count up to a 331, 354 and a 354 industrial...not bad I guess...
http://www.cl***ichemi.com/index1.shtml good site for general info and history. invaluble for ID numbers for all types of hemis
I think the Industrial heads can be used... Jimmy White runs them on his 331. I think you just have to do some simple modifications... it's covered in that book I beleive. Maybe someone can tell you what needs to be done to the heads.
Are the heads solid on ends or have water openings & does intake have/ not have thermostat housing? See if crossover that goes under the carb is square or tall & narrow. Square is same as auto. If intake has thermostat housing & you want to use it, you can use the '54 oval exhaust port heads.
I haven't picked up the Industrial one yet...but when I do, I'll be picking up a p***enger car 354 with it, so it'll just be a matter of seeing the differences in them side by side...with any luck I might be able to pick them up on the 13th, but my wallet might say no...I'll be picking up my 331 that morning for $325, then I'd have to drive an hour and a half back home, unload it and drive 3 hours north to get those 354's for $300 each, then drive 3 hours back home and unload them...that's a minimum of 12 hours of driving and loading/unloading...plus it's $925 bucks out of my pocket not including gas money...if I had a full-size truck I could do it all in one shot...damned Ranger...
Ok, so I called yesterday to try and schedule a time to go pick up those 354's...and today I get a reply e-mail saying they're both gone...now I'm sure the guy doesn't know I'm the one who sent the original e-mail AND called about them...I just hope to (insert deity here) that they are both still there and that the mix-up between the e-mail and phone call mean that by calling he considers them gone...but worst case scenario he has a 331 w/****** for sale too, so if they are sold then I'll pick that up...and if I do get the 354's and the 331 and ****** are still there I'll give you guys a heads up as to how to get ahold of him and pick it up...
So it's official, the two 354's went to someone in Wisconsin, and by the time I called to say I'd take the 331 w/****** he said someone is coming to pick that up on monday...the only hope being that if the guy doesn't show up with cash in hand then I'm next in line...the good news is I'm still picking up the original 331 next Thursday, so at least I have SOMETHING to put into the '40 g***er...just wish I had more so I had parts and a backup plan should one motor fail or not be usable...I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for another one down the road...
