Hemi--Pipe Plug Removal Help

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by FuelRoadster, Nov 29, 2006.

  1. Looking at the back of early Chrysler blocks, there are 4 pipe plugs.

Two are for the water jakets, one is RH oil galley pressure,& the last one seals off crankcase pressure.
Behind the last plug, there's another one deeper inside that blocks the LH oil galley.
A long 3/8 extension is needed to get to this plug, but I cant budge it.
Block has been chemically stripped(no rust,,just raw iron)
Ive tried smacking an extension with a big hammer,& it still wont move.Soaked it with all kinds of penetrant etc.
I cant get to it with a drill because of its depth.
Any ideas on how to get this son of a bitch out?
And NO,,I'm not reaching in there with a rose-bud.The only thing I havn't tried is putting the block in my High Temp Jet Cleaner, getting it completely hot.
    Thanks

An air impact hammer /wrench will prolly make all the difference...

    Is it threaded?
    Bigger breaker bar?
    Air wrench?
Can you heat the outside of the block at the point where the plug is?
Is there a plug on the front of the galley?

then just use a regular welding tip on the torch.

    wear protection :)

Heat and a drop of oil usually does the trick

  5. Easy, drop it off at my shop....:D I'll ummmm fix it for ya:D :D .

Use a relatively short punch almost as big in diameter as the plug. Hit the punch with a hammer almost as hard as you think the block can take before cracking anything. It works every time on tapered pipe plugs... even on my crusty marine blocks that saw 50 years of saltwater!

TC ,You ain't got that thing out yet ? But who am I to talk , I never got mine out either. It's been buried under building materials for almost two years ! SS

  7. What Squirrel said. Mine didn't take much heat. BTW I drilled a small hole in that plug to provide a fine stream of oil on the intermediate shaft gear.

  8. Try to just budge it tighter. If it will move tighter, the threads will break free and it will back right out. Learned that about 25 years ago from an old engine shop machinist.

  9. I'm going with the small tipped torch and a drop of oil or 2.(Thanks Squirrel!)
    BTW,,,the block Im working on is a '55 331 that SnapToo gave me.Standard bore,no cracks,cherry.
    I'll prob take it .010.
Spence,I promise I wont break it.I talked to Famous Amos today & he's gonna help me out with what NOT to do when building a Fuel motor.
Thank you guys for all the tips too:)
