Technical Hemi question for the 34,543th time

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by willys36, Apr 1, 2024.

  1. A friend says he found 4 "1957 & 58 hemis in good condition. 2 are runnable". The price the guy wants sounds good. What would group of engines go for do you think?

Imperial 392s? complete original? or industrial engines? Desoto? or what?

Could be a wide range of value...the pictures didn't show up....and I can't read the numbers you posted...

  3. Will do some recon. I haven't seen them yet. Two sound like 392s since he said they were '375hp'.

Believe nothing until you get the stamping numbers from the topside front of the blocks. Just like every sbc is out of a Corvette, every hemi is a 392...including the 331 I looked at not long ago.

  5. Willys36,
Not for not, what does it matter what other people think something is worth? Are they worth it to you is all that matters. So many people think the cost of anything is to much if it's more than they paid in 1972, others think paying a lot of money for something is a way to have a little humble brag about their success. All that should matter to you is what are you willing to pay for these items to make yourself happy.
UNLESS you only want them to resell or already own them and are trying to gauge the market to list them for sale that would be a little sleezy in my opinion. Hope that's not the case.

Have your friend price out a rebuild. I'd guess it's the typical pricing, fully ready engine with the specs you want is going to be less than a good core and doing it yourself, but you have a hard time tracking down the elusive built to your spec, trustworthy fresh engine.

The yellow engine appears to be a 354, based on the heads, and IMHO $2k is steep. You really have to want it at that price, same for the DeSotos @$1400 and the 54-331 at $1500. The pile-o-parts at $3k ?
The KB-426 might be an ok deal based on prices for iron parts.

  9. It's 100% sleazy! Trying to find out if his price is doable. I have my hemi I built in the mid 60s, been modifying it ever since. I just finished building a '54 331 for a guy but he already had the core. At 75, I definitely don't need any more hemis, especially 4! Just seeing if it is possible to get them circulated into the hot rod community where they belong. Not trying to make a killing on them. I'll back off until I see them and get the parts numbers and engine conditions figured out. Just posted too soon!!
