I'd bought this 'gl*** '32 hood from a buddy last year, intending to simply use it as a pattern to make an aluminum one. A couple days ago I got to thinking, "Why spend all the time and money to make another one, I already made this one fit." So, I set to work on it today. It's almost ready for primer, required quite a bit of gl*** and filler to make it smooth. I had to cut it in 4 pieces and glue it all back together to fit the Model A cowl, and shorten it, so it was sort of a mess. Since the body is 'gl***, I figured a gl*** hood was OK. I also got rid of the character line at the edge, didn't match the '29 cowl, made it look like it didn't belong on the car. I ordered some cowl lacing and one of the neat little leather and zig-zag spring hood hold down sets from Limeworks, along with the new turn signal switch to replace the piece of **** one from Speedway that failed immediately. I think it'll look better with the hood top on. I have sides too, but they'd require blisters to clear the heads, and I like looking at the Hemi anyway.
I like the Firedome emblem on the glove box door! Nice Desoto nod. I have an open element air cleaner with a KN filter in it, I have been thinking about making a SS or aluminum band to go around the filter element and cut out "Desoto Firedome Eight" around it for the air to p*** through.
More work on it today, it LOOKED like it should be straight, but the laying on of hands revealed a couple of low spots. More filler in its future before I squirt primer/surfacer on it.
For Fathers Day I painted the hood and steel wheels for the roadster. The leather strap hold down kit should be here tomorrow, and new tires are waiting for the steelies, along with chrome lug nuts, trim rings and, if I feel like scratching up that shiny blue paint, hub caps. It's a whole new look ...
@flynbrian48 keep those hood straps on the snug side when making them. Mine stretched a tad, maybe heat from the engine caused it. I had to shorten them up after the first year or so.
They're painted and just waiting to get new tires mounted. I'm thinking I don't want to scratch the beautiful paint with the dog-dish hubcaps, just chrome lug nuts and beauty rings...
I think that looks great Brian with the hood top and no sides. Nice job matching the paint! You'll get over scratching up the paint on the wheels. I was the same way before I decided I like the hubcap trim ring look more than having a few scratches.
I'm using footman's loops at the hood and frame, rather than simply cutting a slot in the edge of the hood for the strap to p*** through, which means the 4 loops sent with the LimeWorks kit was 4 short. I have some coming, but I did get the straps done (aside from some leather dressing) on the right side. I'm happy with how they look.
Put a big DONE stamp on the hood project! Next up the car gets the interior done, burgundy leather and vintage look plaid. Stay tuned...
