greetings, need some help. I am finally getting around to putting my hemi and trans together. I have a hot heads adapter to chevy manual trans and flywheel. I already have the starter bolted on. when I tried to fit the bell housing on, it would not line up quite correctly and the starter nose would not allow the bell housing to fully seat on the guide pins. I tried 3 different chevy bells with no luck. what am I doing wrong??? wrong bell??? also the adapter said it was for 10.5 borg and beck bolt pattern, is that different than any other bolt pattern??? thanks pushrod scott
The bolt pattern is the same since it’s on the flywheel. I’m wondering if the shape is different possibly not letting the housing seat. See if it’s touching the inside of bell housing any where. Mine also was supposed to have borg and beck, but I used a diaphragm with no problem.
Could you take some pictures? It would be helpful. It would also be handy to see a picture of the starter in position. Bob
Maybe something in this Wilcap link will be helpful, because apparently there are some differences in the adapters. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...nsmission-adapters-flywheels-starters.118607/ https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/early-hemis-and-manual-transmissions.1099724/ https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hemi-transmission-adapters.385478/ http://www.wilcap.com/Hemi.html Bob
So I found the reason the bell would not seat properly. With the starter in the bell hit the nose. Not sure why the bell has the section in front of starter hole. Tried 3 different bell housings all partially blocked the starter hole as seen in the pic. Sent from my SM-S367VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I would say the Starter was located lower in relation to the GM bellhousing to let the starter clear the Hemi block. Not that unusual. Trim the bellhousing to clear and move on after of course checking Bendix to Ring engagement.
I have had the starter on and hooked up, turns the engine fine, just not with bell installed! Lol Sent from my SM-S367VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I had a cast Chev bell housing that I had to cut Off that portion that hit, starter worked fine. I was only using it for mock up. I used an aluminum Later housing that cleared everything. It was considered a 11” housing. I am not racing so did not use a ****ter shield .
I have couple pics that might help, I am using mini starter. The top pic is the one I had to cut, the lower one is aluminum that fits. Rich
What is the bell casting number uh our used in the lower pic? Sent from my SM-S367VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
No problem, thanks for your help, I hope your health gets better!!! Sent from my SM-S367VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Just get a hole saw that fits that hole as tight as possible. Take out the pilot bit. Run it in as far as you need to clear the starter. DO NOT DO THIS WITH THE FLYWHEEL IN PLACE! Use a cutoff wheel to nearly connect the cut lines. Drill out the rest, to leave rounded corners between the three cut lines, to avoid creating a sharp corner (stress riser).
What bell housing are people using? I have a 383 and a 621 Sent from my SM-S367VL using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Either one should work. The 621 has the muscle car guys spending through the nose. If it were me, I would use the one had has "less value" and sell off the other one, but I am a cheapskate.
