I have a question for the hamb. A guy recently offered me what seemed like a great trade. My 57 tbird for a 32 ford roadster kit car project. It came with a complete but stock chrysler 392 hemi but no transmision. The car has a brookville body with a stock type firewall. What manual transmisions can go behind a 392 and will they clear the stock flat firewall? The car is a roller with 9 inch rear and a typical four bar front straight axle. This is the first non ford powered hot rod for me but the engine came with the car and is supposed to be good so I will use it if I can.
****** adaptors www.hothemiheads.com or wilcap. might want to get Tex Smith's Hemi book from Hot Rod Library.
With an adapter from wilcap or hot heads you can use any small block mopar trans. The best of these would be the NP 833 four speed. Somone on the board was selling one a month ago or so, I just dont remember who. There are also Cad/ Lesalle, and Packard adapters around if you want a more traditional trans. I dont know to much about clearing the stock firewall, I've never put a hemi in a '32.
Is the firewall stock or is it a brookville? Brookville is a bit flatter and will give you a few more inches of room.. As for the Hemi fitting in Yes . Will the hood sides fit No,But you can get a aftermarket one. The one thing you might have to play with is the location of the trans or K member in the ch***ie.. Was it set up for the Hemi and what trans? I had a roadster shop kinda stock ch***ie that I cut back when I used my Hemi. Another way it to move the grill and radiator forward a bit.. Their is always more then one way to skin a cat .. Sounds like a nice project and trans adapter are available from wilcap.com hotheads.com or PAW. thanks John
Here is a start to a stick setup. 1957 392 Hemi 3-Speed STD Trans & Bellhousing Rare Factory STD Trans Set-Up Item number: 4597676841
I don't know about your firewall clearance, but I'm useing a 58 plymouth 6 cyl. bell housing behind my 354, it bolts right up and I'm also using a 58 plymouth 3 speed trans. with ford column shift.
Thank you guys. The car came with brookvilles flat firewall and the engine on a stand with a stick shift flywheel on it but no bellhousing or transmision. Using a mopar four speed would be fine with me. It should handle a stock hemi in a light car. Good information. thanks again.
