Was at a local cl***ic car salvege yard this weekend and found a early hemi and trans somewhat covered up.I asked the guy what size it was and how much he said he tought it was a 331 out of a truck he tought(he acted like he wasnt sure) and he would take no less than $1500. My question is that too much to pay and is there any visual id other than casting #s?

Go to hothemiheads.com they have the numbers. To find the year the numbers are on the front in front of the intake on the block.

The price depends on the condition of the motor. Does it turn freely? You need to check the casting number to make sure what engine it is. Chrysler engines 331, 354, and 392 have more parts available for building. Also early 331 had extended housing on the block. When you go to hot heads as fatabone suggests look at the swap meet there to get an ideal what engines are going for.

There is the ID stamp infront of the valley cover. Sometimes they are not readable, there is a casting # between the head & valley cover p***. side rear. 1500 sounds a bit high to me.
