Scoot,I have been through most of those and have not seen anything on the truck motors. As in the Power Giants
decal on 354s not sure if used on 331. Truck engines can have 51-4 timing covers or 55 & up, large valve stems & rotators.
I believe you'll find the term "Power Giant" was just the name of the truck series, like F-150 or Silverado. Dodge Power Giants were produced for several years. You could think of them as a power wagon "lite". The hemis in them should be the Chrysler 331 or 354. Dodge did put "Dodge" hemis in some of their lighter trucks and depending on the year you could find anything from a 241, 259, 270 or 315. The heavier duty trucks pretty much all had the Chrysler's though.
Dawm Skippy Bro......if its completely trashed.....paint it up, make a display stand outta it and put the dawm thing over in the corner.......folks are throwing alot of them awaywith the economy being bad......we need to p*** a few artifacts on down the line.....even if they don't run....... You do know.....with a good machinist and shop.....they can take a piece of **** and have a nice running motor........
Hey dude.....I got a old 392 dragster engine that I put back almost stock running 2 small holley 650's, and a 6-71 @ 8% underdive and she dyno'ed at 615 horses on pump gas.....as I ran the engine in the power was creeping up ever so slightly as the valves and rings were seating......... I'm gonna put mine in a T-Bucket! WWEEEEEEEeeeeeeee.........
Most people don't really refer to the "Power Giant 354" name, but refer to them as just "Dodge truck Hemi". Few threads on truck motors here. I have a 331 Dodge truck Hemi. It's a 1956 model. Truck engines are just fine to use in hot rods, but you will want to make some changes. The intake manifold, heads, distributor and possibly cam, are setup for truck duty (heavy hauling). The distributor will probably be a mechanical only advance setup (no vacuume) and the runners on the intake manifold and heads were really designed for low-end torque (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The heads aren't junk or anything, and may even have some benefits, but generally have various little things to look at. I would suggest an intake manifold swap and distributor swap for sure. Again, you'll have to check into the cam a little more. Otherwise, the engine overall should be fine. Something else may be the pistons. Depending on what it was set up for, you may find the pistons to be a little low in compression. But... all in all, everything depends on what you desire to use the engine for. Lots of potential and often times they are even built a little heavier. There are some threads discussing truck motors here. Have a look around and you'll see some more information.
Well from what I could dig up on the net the Power Giant trucks were produced from 1957-1960. The Power Giant in 1957-1958 had a new 204 HP 315 CI which was an option in the light duty trucks. This was a Hemi engine. So I am ***uming that 1959-1960 the Power Giants ran the 354 Hemis. Been trying to get a hold of the guy all morning with no luck so far.
...I am still trying to figure out why everyone runs to hh for id info when scooter has it all right here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121000&highlight=hemi+tech .
For the record, I haven't been to HH once. YOU guys have the down&dirty. Though I'm on a limited budget, YOU (not HH) have guided me on my search for parts, cause I don't have dough or room for mistakes. I now HAVE the forgies & rings for the 330/341 dream, and now I'm closing in on the 4-B intake. (One thing at a time. Next, will come the cam!)
I spoke to the guy today after many phone calls with many voice mails. The motor did come out of a truck. The dad owned a trucking business for many years and the son is trying to hekp him sell some stuff off. So It is a Power Giant. I just dont know which one it is yet.
The guy is harder than hell to get a hold of. Wanted to run out there this morning and got the same ol voice mail.
If you get it make sure and try to get any ***ociated parts like a flywheel etc. that might be lying around as some of that stuff can be hard to find or expensive...especially since the chrysler cars never got a "true" standard ****** to go with a hemi but I'm pretty sure the trucks did.
Where exactly in Nor Cal is this. Could I have his contact information because I would be interested if he has anything else. You said he had a trucking buisness. Are there any other motors or parts around?
What are you looking for? I can check for you. But as far as giving up my contact info thats not going to happen. The guy is real hard to get a hold of and does not want to be bothered. Let me know what you are looking for as I am supposed to meet with him tomorrow morning.
That is a 354 Power Giant from a truck. Probably frozen but the heads, rockers and valvecovers crang and rods are all useable. The valvecovers are actually good ones to have (kind of rare) because they have stickers on them and not stampings, extra cool to have after some chrome plating.
Had an appoitment with the guy for this morning. He calls at 9:00 last night to cancel and it will have to wait till next week. Geesh this is getting to be a PITA.
as with most of this sort of thing... ...that I run across, the engine and other various stuff has been sitting in the corner for untold number of years... and it aint like it "has to go" due to some other reason.... .............. so, he is in no hurry........
hey MASTER...if he gave it to you. that would be to much, in my view. just because it's a HEMI doesn't mean it's worth squat! look my h.a.m.b. brother, i can plainly see it's been outside in the weather for years. i'am just saying! automotive machine work is expensive these day's and parts, forget about it...POP.
I don't think I would tell him to "forget about it" (especially since there could be some good parts there), But I think 35mastr should be aware that he may very well be buying a stuck, POS and only lay out the cash that he can afford to loose just in case it is bad. However, it could be in great condition and start up with a just a little gas dribbled down the carb too. (dream, dream, dream)
yeah, cuz Hemis are a dime a dozen, so you can p*** this one up on your way to the other hundred you are thinking about
Hell . . . you got this far . . . might as well take the plunge and go all the way and check it out. I'm sure it will be stuck, but that doesn't scare most of us. Even if the block has a cracked cylinder - they can usually be sleeved, no big deal. The hardest part will be getting the damn pistons out of it . . . never fun.
