yet again a quick comment has been posted in another thread about the henrob torch.

i've been interested in one of these things for over a year now and comments have gone both ways regarding them. i've wanted an oxy - for all the cutting and heating and brazing that oxy's are good for - for ages, but i also want to weld aluminium, and weld it well...

so... are these torches WORTH the dollars? here in australia the torch by itself is $690 (about $450 US), and the complete kit (torch, two low pressure regs, hoses, visor, lighter, video) is $1000 ($650 US).

either way, i'm going to buy an oxy torch, i'm just curious to hear the opinion of people that actually USE these things as to whether the extra money is dollars well spent.

i'm sure their must be a bunch of HAMBers that have first hand experience with these things, and not just heard all the same stories that i have, so... what say ye?

    thanks for any help.

I have been learning to use one the last couple of weeks. So far everything has went well but I have not mastered the aluminium welding yet. I am going to try a new filter on my welding lense today. I am having trouble seeing the puddle through the orange flame and I think the blue filter will help. Cutting steel is amazing.

first used one in welding classes in college...
then at the welding shop i worked at. Got a lot of use in the 5 years i was there.
When i opened my own shop, i went out and bought one. Got a lot of use there.

I'd still have it, but it got stolen a while back.

It does weld aluminum pretty well... not full-on TIG quality, but damn close if you've got the feel down.

cuts sheet through 1/4" VERY clean. very little slag, straight cut, very thin kerf...

Gonna have to go buy another one now... i miss it too much.

on a side note, has anyone ever seen a used one??? Seems to me that nobody actually sells one, once they bought it.
