Thanks Baron, that site doesn't get updated to often on the stuff for sale it seems. That's where I found the info on the disc brake upgrade for the J though.

Today i was not so sore so I found myself repairing the tube in my slick equipped Schwinn banana seat bike. After riding it a bit with my little guy, I felt like I accomplished something so I decided to try the quarter.

So why would these new Moser axles be increasingly harder to turn the more you tighten the retaining bolts ? The axles are the same length as the old ones, the splined end seems to go into the spool ok. They spin until you seat the bearing all the way into the housing and tighten the nuts.
Nuts not tight, backing plate loose of course. Moser is closed until Monday so no calling their tech line until then.

Did you verify the length of the original axles vs the new ones. You probably did but just asking. Bent housing? Bent tube? Axles bottoming out in the diff?

I know the new axles use sealed bearings. Did the housing have inner seals possibly used with the stock axles/bearings? And make sure you don't use synthetic gear oil. It will leak past the bearings (been there, done that....).

take a spot of plumbers putty stick it on the end of the axle. You need clearance. Cut to fit.

Yeah the axles are the same length as to what came out of there according to the measuring tape. I do have outer seals in the housing near the ends and did notice the new axles came with an O-ring around the bearing.
Think that could be whats going on, the little doughnut on the inside of the bearing is bottoming out on the seal ?

I would take an educated guess(42 years of fixing cars for a living) and say yes. The bearing retainer ring is hitting the seals. Remove the seals, put a coat of silicon sealer on the housing / bearing surface, and the axles should go right in.

Was just fishing around the google answers and it said most would leak past the bearing O-ring seals if you pull the inner seals. One even posted a quote from a Moser tech and he said that the inner seal is not required but he would run them.
Sounds like the rtv would seal things up and since it's a sealed bearing it doesn't get oil from the housing anyway.

I have been running no seals with o-ring bearings in all my 9 inch Fords for the last 25 years. No leaks.

Pulled those inner seals and everything is good to go now, there was a .30 difference in the length of the outside bearing to outside retainer ring as compared to the other axles. Moser said with the O-ring bearing you don't need the inner seal anyhow but I did put a little rtv in there as Baron suggested.

My dad started drag racing in the 50's and had me behind the wheel at age 14.

I/we tore up everything we ran, in one form or fashion....bent body panels, exploding clutches, you name it.

As long as it's not totaled and you're still moving under your own power, it's all good.

Replace that axle and run it with the body damage until you get the time to straighten it out. Those in the know will love seeing it there with the war wound intact.

I had planned on racing today, but dropping over a half a grand on dailey driver repairs (gotta keep momma with wheels) yesterday means no budget for racing. I hope to get the car to test and tune maybe Tuesday at the local track to see how it works.

Glad to hear that you're moving forward.

And I totally understand the daily driver repairs....they're kicking my tail right now too. I have a transmission from an Odyssey torn apart in the garage and need to clean out some @$%@#$ thing called the Idle Air Control Valve in a 98 Accord.

But, I don't do debt and therefore drive used cars that need attention.

Looking forward to hearing about your first run down the strip.

Hi Phil just found this thread, too bad about the car. As mentioned at least the axle broke on the line instead of down the track. Have you checked with a body shop with a frame machine, they should be able to pull that out. Best of luck , Bill
