Took a 30-31 bar I had from a friend, cut it in half. Put an extra frame I had on a work table and levelled it off. Clamped each side of the old headlight bar to the area I wanted to mount it to the frame (being VERY sure that it wasn't going to move under the pressure of bending the metal as it was heated to a glowing red) then heated one side, being sure to keep the flame moving around the area being heated so as to evenly heat the metal properly to get the best mallable workable piece.

Then I took it, bent it outward to the side to where I wanted it for that time. Then let it cool a bit and worked on the other side, to match what I had already done on the other side. I then went from one side to the other untill I had a desirable look. Making sure that everything sat level or within bubble and evenly.

I made the crossbar piece in the center from cold rolled 5/8" round stock. I heat it up slowly running from one area all the way across to the other side,...to get a nice even bend,...you can get antsy and impatient and it's not gonna work, so you have to take your time and as you put a constant pressure on the piece, you will feel the metal bend slightly as it begins to become mallable and workable.

Then I Tig welded it to the end pieces after grinding and fitting up the center section to the sides.

Again, thank you for the kind words.

Unfortunatly, nothing yet. The guy that is making the patern has been thrashing on a Bonneville car and has pushed everything else to the side.

    Sorry it isn't better news.

I've got a question that I've been tring to search for a discusion about, but have come up empty.

Has anyone run one of Dan Price's cross flow Cragar heads?

I've read a lot of the Banger Meet threads and I have not read much about Dan's head.

Some of the concerns that I have are:

2:1 rocker arm ratio, is that going to put too much preasure in the cam?
If not, Are the springs so weak that they will float at higher RPM?
Are the intake ports too big for street use?
Any long term street use issues?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan has been making his head for several years now.

Are you confusing this with Charlie Yapps new copy of the Roof OHV?

  8. I think you could contact Dan4 banger and see if he has any feedback. He has always made quality products and he was/is active in racing in the midwest. He used to be quoted quite often in S O S S until C Yapp brought out his own head.
I would think one would have a problem choosing between Dan4 banger's head and Steves Miller. We were treated to step by step updates on the Miller but not much on Dan's head.

    Bill,
I have Talked to Dan about his head. And like a proud father, he can't say anything bad about his product. Everyone I've asked says that he makes good stuff,
but I haven't talked to anyone that has run his head.

I heard the same thing about the Ardun head before I bought mine but now that I'm running one, I can't confirm any of the positive coments about the quality of any of Frick's work.

I'm not douting that Dan does good work. This time I want independent first hand info on somthing that I will fork out $4000.00 for.

Knowing what I know about Steve Serr's head, and that I've seen more of his heads on the road then any OHV head, I would run one of his heads. But my car is set up for a cross flow head. Plus, I'd like to be a little different.

I'll try this once again. Whoever makes the first post in August banger forum, how about putting the title in July's forum?

  17. You might try to call Jim Gordon at Antique Automotive Industries in Rosemead Ca 626 288 2121. I say try as he is hard to catch on the phone. This is Gene Scott's old business and they were the ones who started and as far as I know are still casting these heads. This is the first time that I have heard of this high a compression. I once mentioned to Jim that I was thinking of having one milled and he said that I should leave it as it was as this was the best ratio for the chamber design or something like that. Like it was 10 years ago.

Here's a question for ya! Who besides Red's Headers makes a dual outlet header for a Model A? I saw the video on here and the post, and it sounded like the Red's header takes quite a bit of modification to fit a full fendered Model A, but I luv that sound. Also, has anyone ever ran a couple of old single barrel carbs fro a 216 chevy or something like that on a dual carb intake on a mildly modified banger?

  20. RE: Crossflow Miller type head
I'd wait 'til Price comes up with some flow fiqures. Harry Wight (Bell Auto Parts) tried to make a Crossflow Miller in the '30's. It ws a failure. Valves, like the pics of Price's look, were shrouded.

    Hi guys,
I don't own anything with a banger in it, but was invited to a banger event this past weekend. This event was a real eye opener for me. Very KooL event...

This was done on an 1/8th mile track and only single car passes were made.

I thought you guys would enjoy the pics I took. Oh yeah, the guy I took a picture of while he was taking a pic is Bob D'Olivo. He is a HotRod Mag Photographer from the 50s. He's 80+ years young and still enjoys photographing cars...

That black roadster with the orange wires and the super hot four banger in it looks awesome!
Would love to see more or find out more about that car!

    He was blind wasnt he?

  25. You might google Vic King, Midnite Oil. At one time Vic owned the patterns for the Rutherford head

I have heard that this sealer:
    http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=22005
is actually the olde soddium silicate stuff...posting it because Moroso items will be easy to find and order.
On the heating/cracking issue, I suspect the biggest cause is localized heating in A's and in B's used in Model A's by owners too ignorant and lazy to use the advance lever.
Running retarded can actually cause iron manifolds to glow red, so you can imagine what is happening in that valve area.

  30. fur biscuit,

Any more info/pics on this? I'm lovin' the hood!
