Event Coverage HERSHEY, any vendors see the comment about hotrods?

My guess its an insurance thing.

 

The AACA is all about preserving antique automobiles not customs. I think its great that they stick to their rules.

On this site I have read the complaints when the NSRA broadened their rule to include newer cars.

There are some who would allow billet at Billet Proof.

There are lots of big shows for customs and hot rods, I for one enjoy seeing these cars as they were.

I dont understand the "screw them" mentality...it just doesnt make sense to me...the show is being held by an organization that promotes the preservation of antique automobiles...and the rule is there to keep the crap out...that is the only reason...it is nothing against hot rodders...the thing is if you can go and find tons of parts for the project your working on or a potential new project wouldnt you want to go...because usually you can find stuff there that you wont find anywhere else in the world...its just weird that people take it so personally espicially when the show is free to get into your not paying any money to go walk around

 

thats the thing if you look at the numbers more people show up every year...i have friends form England and Germany that fly over just for Hershey...its a world wide event

Look at the cars that was in the AACA museum. I went to AACA meet last year was talking to the judge about Pebble Beach letting old hotrods in the show and AACA museum display. I know I was getting under the judge skin. It about time the AACA start looking at traditional hotrods.

 

I think it would be a shame if people did stop coming. Like you said they come from everywhere. All the cool stuff being in one spot is great. I meant when the green's not coming in hand over fist, the rules may lighten up. They usually do. Look at the street rod nationals. Restored cars are cool too,but there is going to be as much hot rod stuff(parts) there, as restored stuff. Parts is parts.

 

Like others have already said 'it's their show not yours", so if you or I do not like the rules stay home and stop crying about it!

 

I remember Hershey broadcasting the no modified cars rule over 25 years ago, this is nothing new. Rodders all knew that their cars weren't welcome and went to Carlisle instead. Apparently it hasn't been rigidly enforced for a while and some issue came up that forced an increased enforcement. Read that as 'someone screwed up'. It's not a capricious and arbitrary decision, there IS a reason for it. Hershey is a huge deal, the line must be drawn somewhere.

 

sure hate to see that cherry 32' door go on a "hot rod"! in this economy pay me and bolt that muther fucker on the space shuttle. cash is cash. the modified vendor vehicle really does sound like bullshit. as for the rest "its their show"

 

I think that Hershey is one of the best "car guy/gal" events going, bar none.

Used to go to Hershey and Carlisle all the time when I lived up that way. Great fun.

If you don't like the fact that Hershey is trying to head off the Rat Rod crowd from trying to attend, then pick some other event to spend your time and money at.

As I remember, this board used to be about traditional Hot Rods. As time has passed, I see more and more Rat Rod build threads. Does it bother me? No, not to the point that I don't frequent the HAMB daily.

Point being - if you can't appreciate Hershey for what it is, and has aways been, then don't go.

 

I wouldn't care about the rule but my shop truck and only vehicle on the road is my 48 "modified" truck. I need it to haul my junk in. Didn't plan on displaying it. Guess I'll have to find other means.

The comparing Billetproof to the Hershey swapmeet is not the same. This is a large parking lot filled with swapmeet venders, their late model rides and million dollar motor homes.

I would agree and not even try to get a hot rod into their show or car coral.

Funny thing is I bet they would let a new truck with all the latest goofy shit on it like dubs but my old truck is not welcome.

I'll still go and buy their cool parts for my hot rods!

I have noticed that most hotrodders have nothing against, and actually appreciate, a fully restored antique or classic automobile, while the same benevolence cannot be seen in reverse from the antique guys.

That being said, there are plenty here on the HAMB who will absolutely condemn something not in the "traditional" style. AACA sets the rules for their show-and they've written them down for all to see. You don't like the rules-please don;t come. I'll be there and it's still the greatest show on earth-and close to home,too.

 

skidmarks....yeh I had the sport coupe there and would have taken the sign out or even moved it out without complaining. I asked a few people in the know if it was OK and they thought it should be. I tried to keep a real low profile with it.

Whenever I have used my truck for my swap spaces I have pulled it in and put it to the back of the space. Again just trying to keep it low profile.

I know there are still a lot of hard core antiquer's out there and make sure I don't wear anything having to do with hot rods. You never know when a guy will jack the price just cause he thinks you're a rodder.

Good thing I'm not going. My daily driver is a lowered, flaked '91 Caprice. Then again, my flaked, slammed, shaved, T.J. tuck n rolled '65 Coupe DeVille (It's for sale, see sig) got deleted off this very site. Huh, maybe I will go and take the Caddy.

 

The "Documented Race Cars" in Class 24A are safe as far as I know, but it's a safe bet that most people in AACA are clueless to what is allowed in that class. I'll miss the spattering of Hot Rods and modified trucks this year, but it is nice to see everyone here on the HAMB is in agreement on the host club setting the rules. I just hope there isn't some guy making a 2-3 thousand mile haul in a "banned" vehicle that will get turned away at the gate.

Kind of silly you can show your 1980 Chrysler Cordoba but not your 1948 post-war hot rod-but it's still their show.

I do miss the mud-that's where the treasures were. Even now, the first thing I pack for Hershey is a rain suit.

 

Complaign all you want... they wont change, your words will only tire yourself out.

Actually, I like it the way it is and I think they stay big because of it-vendors come because they know they will get a specific crowd and customers come because they know the parts will be there.

When you think about it, a lot of us build hot rods by scrounging and adapting and fitting stuff together-sure lots of money is involved in some cars but if you are restoring a car, ALL of it has to be as orginal and perfect as possible and that takes MONEY. I'd best the average restoration customer has a lot bigger budget than the average hotrod customer. AACA has a good thing going, even if their demographic is aging even faster than ours.

 

I don't care if they make us all wear red sailor outfits, I'll still be there! Hershey is Hershey and it CAN'T be beat! One of the best weeks of my year.

 

I can still smell the Hershey mud/straw mix from when I was little...

in some ways it's just not the same unless you lose a boot in that slop!

 

Hershey and Modified cars... Ive read this notice upon receiving my stickers for 09. After thinking about this I remembered a post on the HAMB last year about some guy mad at a the Hershey staff because his hot rod was denied access to the car corral. Now the registration say specifically NO hot Rods in the car corral.

If I'm not mistaken this was to prevent people from purchasing a car coral space just to get a better parking spot and to limit the car corral to antique stocker type vehicles that were the center piece of the show.

Now if I remember correctly didn't the guy, who got thrown out for having a non qualified auto, throw some kind of big stink about how he felt that the AACA guys where a bunch of jerks, get into an argument with some senior citizen volunteer and then into a pissing contest with the officials. And weren't some nasty words throw around like idiots and dumb mfers.

Well this is an example of how one person can screw it for everyone when they don't use good judgment. This event is put on by a ton of volunteers for the AACA, they might have some debatable rules but follow the rules and there is no problem, this is the way things are done. It's no different than any other car show you attend.

By putting in this new rule saying no modifieds they are saying that they are tired of this crap dont expect their people to put up with verbal abuse and to eliminate the problem just ban all modified vehicles even if its your parts delivery driver.

So to the guy that started this, paybacks are a bitch and now all of us are paying for your actions. Thanks a lot.

Stocker or Modified, it is still one of the best swap meets in the country.

 

Speaking of Hershey, thinking about going for the first time this year. Assume that if I can only go one day it should be Saturday? I'm not necessarily looking for parts, I mostly want to just look at the cars. Do the parking lots fill up by a certain time? Thanks.

 

Get there early Saturday...as in by 5am to watch the cars drive onto the show field. You'll never see such a variety of rolling sculpture.

I talked to my friend who is a past AACA President...He said this. There is a lot of in-fighting (Hershey Region) going on about the blurb regarding modifieds and several other things that were also stated in the rules. They Hershey Region AACA, know that there will be modifieds at the show...they are aware that its too hard to adequately define what a modified can be. I brought up the flea market sticker that shows a modified Chevelle (Mag Wheels).

He said this...come to the show in "Whatever" and there should be no real problems with the possible exceptions, like those described by Dick Spadaro. In any situation, if one occurs, keep your wits about you and be courteous to the volunteers. If you need to do so, call for an AACA Official to resolve any disputes. Again, they are aware of the modified issues here, but the paper is already printed and out there. They are also very aware that the loss of modifieds, customs, etc. would be a major economic blow to the event...they ain't stupid!!!

So, just play it KOOL, and have a great time. I hope this helps.

+1 for early. My favorite spot is at the intersection on Hersheypark drive. If you get bored there(not likely) just walk along the line of cars toward the show field. It's the most wonderful traffic jam you can imagine...
