ONE WEEK from today I'll be on my way to the AACA Swap Meet in Hershey, Pa. and wonder if the events on Wall Street will have any effect on things. Do you think there will be more vendors dumping past "Keepers", will there be less play money being spent? Personally I'm going to have fun and put a few faces to HAMB names, because I'm out of good parts. As stated in other Hershey threads my spot is C4J 41-42 and HAMB members can leave parts in my spot for the day to save making a trip to your car durring prime buying time. Hope to see lots of you at the Friday get together at the Race Car Run In. Bob

I think at first ,,it will affect Wall Street kinda people the worst. Those who have money saved as apposed to spread out all over in get rich quick kinda things should be ok for now. Though I would suspect folks will spend less just cause nothing is clear as to what the hell is really going on and what will happen.Parts should do well but I bet teh big $$ cars will sit

I hope the bottom falls out so I can BUY BUY BUY BUY, like Zach said Hershey money is different from any other money spent through the year. Every year I watch the foreign buyers and see how they react to the value of the dollar.....today's value is British Pound 0.554201 to the dollar 1.8044 . basically I don't think we will see to much of a change in spending on parts but certain cars may be a different story, we shall see.

  8. Can't wait to see you guys... I usually can't be stopped as I'm on my missions. But I hope to find some time to catch up. Witnessed Zach there last year, but never caught up. I'll be out there Tues thru thurs... never miss it. Its my absolute favorite thing in the world to do...and place to be.

A good friend of mine whom is a heavy 32 dealer always tells me... "I've got stock in Ford, but I'd trade it for vintage parts any day, worth that much more"!

I think it will be business as usual. You guys have NO idea how many foreign buyers are on their way right now as I type this.

Well, I predict it will rain!. Oh, wait, that's a sucker's bet-it always rains.

I think the big money will be there and the Duesenbergs will sell. So will bits and pieces, cause everyone will have $5-10. I think the deals will be in the mid-range stuff-$100-1000 because that takes some consideration by the middle class-who are hurting. Like the others, I have been stashing money away all year,so Hershey money is different money.

I think rare and ultra rare parts will maintain their price, but 'commodity' items - i.e. more common parts, will soften.

The hardest thing for a car guy is to cut back on his drug of choice.

  15. I got a new one yesterday... can't have it though. hahaha.

I'll get Jeremy to pick up that modified from you, pay you at Hershey.

  16. I predict that the hotels will still gouge us, the domestic attendance will be down and the Europeans will be picking up all they can.

Oh, and the sure bet - it will rain.

Bluto, I'll be haveing a crab pretzel is your bride's honor!! I talked to Ben Franklin this week, he said Hi. The flea market spaces and car corral spaces are all sold out. There's several differant auctions going on all week. Ed Hermann, from the History channel "Automobile" series, Leno, and Moustache Man will all be hanging around. The fences are up and the fields are mowed. It just quit raining so the weather's got to be good. Don't miss the factory setups in the Orange Field and the 3 experimental turbine Firebirds in the AACA museum. The Harley Earl Le Sabre and the '02 Cadillac are two of the GM cars in the Orange Field. Ford is supposed to have a special T birthday deal. See you guys soon, I'll be waiting!

I'm just hoping for the trend that has somewhat killed Carlisle for me doesn't continue at Hershey. Prices have gone crazy for things that aren't rare and it ripples all the way to other people with the same parts so now nobody wants to deal. Today I think I'll blame Barrett Jackson. Tomorrow I'll blame Ebay.

  20. I'm bringing Brad54 up with me from GA on Thurs night, so we'll be at the fields first thing Fri morning.

Brad's never been to Hershey, so we need to break him in gently:D

Oh, and I just had a BIG hunk of ingrown toenail taken out yesterday, so I can walk for HOURS!!!

Sold at local swap meets with a buddy 2 of the last 4 weekends. Between the two of us we had everything from new to old, hot rod to 4x4. And we sold the shit out of EVERYTHING below a hundred bucks. Over a hundred bucks, we took 90%+ back home. Talking to other sellers they were reporting similar patterns, people came looking to buy, just not big items. I didn't see buyers carrying anything of real value the whole time.

    Good luck folks!

  23. If anybody sees 'em, I'm looking for '27 or earlier Chevrolet spindles.

I still think the "fire sale" stuff never gets to the big swap meets ,

its sold to the guy down the street , put in a local paper etc

selling at a big swap meet like Hershey you need to get your space a year before , IF you can even get a space ,

Sellers save parts for Hershey, LA Roadster show etc and the other big meets that bring in the once a year buyers.

Dig deep and post some pictures of what you find......

Sometimes when the markets get weird, the good stuff goes up.
Look at the Bonham's sale results last week in Maine.

That's what happened when the housing market & stocks tanked in the late 80s....cars went nuts.

Investors are looking for places to put their money. They buy nice cars, so shops & restorers will pay more to finish a car for the hot market.

  27. I haven't been to Hershey in probably 15 years and was thinking about skipping Carlisle this year to attend this... any opinions?

Thats the same thinking I'm having right now. I haven't found anything I needed at carlisle in quite a while and it seems people are having much better luck at Hershey then when I was there last. It used to have the rep of only having Carlisle leftovers.
