He's still virginal, Root, just like he was when I last posted him with the quick hand-done rub-out. I'm getting set up to do several major mods/changes all at once -- tires, tonneau, cab stacks . . . Family and work stuff temporarily got in the way but that's about all cleared up now. The heavy-duty mechanical stuff will happen over the Winter -- fresh and "built" 8CM torquer stroker motor (about a genuine double of the orignal 100-hp figure), 9-inch rear axle, and -- hopefully -- an AOD trans. I'll settle for a three-speed Ford light-truck trans if I have to, and equip the rearend with a tall pumpkin.) Each time I drive this old warrior I'm amazed at how really sweet it is. Instead of feeling like a nice old truck, it simply feels like a NICE truck regardless of age. It's going to be an active element of both the Tardel-McKenzie and the Fuller teams at SpeedWeek '04.
Mike.....you're sounding pretty positive about makin it to Speedweek next year. I'm gonna go ahead and schedule my vacation to attend....Can I get a date for it? Uhh, not THAT kinda date. I just need to know when it's gonna happen. ps........did you get your parts yet? Lemme know if you need the combination to the lock...I saved it in case you misplaced it.
av8, found an old '48 F1 a week ago, Fuelpump saw it for sale and like a stray pup it followed me home. Its sitting on my trailer waiting for room in my shop to get it running. It has not been driven for 31 years (license plate from 1972 still attached). There is a built flatty under the hood that is frozen. It has a set of Edmunds heads and a dual carb setup with 2 94's. The truck is no where as nice as yours as it was a northeast truck and the rust was glazed over in the 70's. I'm going to try and find a better set of front fenders, but I think the rest can be made presentable with a little TLC. Plans for getting it on the road include the installation of the fresh flathead out of my wifes '40, but am considering a final drivetrain similar to what you have planned. Film at 11:00. Frank
av8, i hope that you do a better job of desalting your truck next year than i did this year. clarence has been to the salt 3 times. the first two times didn't seem to hurt anything. i thought that i cleaned him as well this year as i did in the other two years, but i've got rust stains running down the body/fenders from every seam in him. i don't know what i did wrong, but please take really good care of your truck. i'd hate for it to deteriorate, as it's obviously a very nice example. fab, good luck finding those fenders. this is not sarcasm. i've owned clarence for over 30 years. it needed fenders when i bought it but i've not found one in all that time that was for sale and better than what i have. can't remember who right now, but someone's making patch panels for the 3 places on each side that are always rusted (note: i'll bet that someone comes on here within an hour and tells you who it is that's making them). i think that the six pieces add up to over a grand, though. glass is available in one piece or individual pieces. if you find two sets of useable steel fenders please send me the other set. sorry to hijack the post; now back to your regular programming.
acht, I'll keep you in mind on the fenders, I'm going to check out a possibility this week. If anyone here knows about some nice ones let Acht or I know, I secretly hope I find some before you. haha! Frank
