I may have a trade deal working on a 30 sedan in Ontario.

Has any of you ever sold or bought a car from the States?
what's the precedure for dealing across the border?
if it's a straight trade, what then?
    How is the****le situation handled?

    Thanks a ton!

  2. No big deal getting old cars across the border as long as the paperwork is in order. Even if it's a trade you will have to pay taxes.

    Where's the car?

They only experience I have...I purchased a car off e-bay in Oct ..from Harris burg Penn.. I had to have the****le at the border crossing 72 hours prior to my being able to bring the car across ..show my paper work at the border...then proceed to canada customs and Pay all the local taxes...duty was free...my suggestion due to the outrageous taxes, you may want to have an appraisal done for customs or at least the person comming this way.. In Ont the taxes are 15% that's pretty stiff....Only in Canada...eh..eh...fatchuk

Grumpy...I have sold a car in the US a couple of times. The best thing you can do is ask the guy in Ont. to deliver it to the US side of the border. The US Customs guys will ask the driver where he is going. I usually told them I was going to a car show or was taking the car to a rod shop for repairs. They were pretty cool about it. Check with your local license bureau to see what they need to transfer the****le (called ownership in Ont.) to your name. States differ in the requirements so make sure you get the necessary paperwork in order.
Bringing a car into Ontario is a different matter altogether. The****le of the US car must be at the US customs office where you are crossing at least 72 hours prior to you bringing the car across. The Customs guys need to check the****le vs. the VIN tag. These are fairly new regulations to minimize the stolen cars crossing the border.
If you are driving your car to Ontario, you probably don't need to do this. BUT, the new Canadian owner must still produce the proper paperwork to the tax hungry********s who work at the Cdn. Customs and the local Ministry of Transportation.
My suggestion, meet the guy you are making the deal with at a location on the US side (Niagara Falls NY, Buffalo, Port Huron or Detroit, make the deal and go your separate ways. If you do it this way, MAKE SURE YOUR ORIGINAL****LE IS AT THE US CUSTOMS office 72 HOURS PRIOR. They are real******s about this. If your are there 1 hour early, the****holes will still make you wait 1 hour.
If you want a simpler way but less, shall we say, legal, PM me.
