Im hoping to have some knowledge dropped on me. Did the FORD E4OD overdrive automatic trans ever get put behind a Ford engine with a 184 tooth flexplate? I think it was, but evenso Im still confused on what the year range would have been for these...for the purposes of tracking one down. Basically I need to use a 184 tooth flexplate because of its m***ive diameter so I can put a newer style starter on the flatcad. can anyone offer me some insight on what trans were offered behind a 184 tooth flexplate? and maybe some year ranges... thanks.
The 184 tooth is the manual flywheels for FE. The automatics used a 164 tooth. 93-97 should be the years for 460 with E4OD. I think there was some overlap with the C6. Teeth: 164; Pitch: 12; O.D.: 14.23" Diesels used Teeth: 155; Pitch: 10; O.D.: 15.75" with the E4OD.
they sell 184 tooth flexplates though.... again, Im very confused as there isnt much info out there. I really dont want to just head to the junkyard and start pullin trans for the hell of it.
search for phoenixtransmissionproducts.com out of Weatherford, TX - good company where you should be able to get some answers to your questions
so I went across a stroke of luck I guess... Those 155 tooth diesel flexplates seems large enough. I can't find much on the pre 94s but the same flexplate was used from 95-03 diesels, and they are pretty cheap. ~$70. I found a 9 tooth 10 pitch starter pinion gear and backed out what starter comes with it, turns out to be a mopar mini stater. Perfect as the bolt location and pattern on the mopar starter is ideal for an adapter plate. The only thing I'm left on is will the 155 tooth diesel flexplate fit into the bellhousing of the gas 460 or do I have to use a diesel transmission as well.
I went digging through my links and found this site again. I found it when looking for engine-trans swap info for an off-topic car. http://www.ringgear.net/Catalogs/View-category.html The starter ring gear catalog has useful OD and tooth count info;
