on a 66 tempest 326 with the stock 2 barrel did they use manifold va***e for the vac advance. got on at the dealer that some stick billies tried to "rebuild" and now it dont run right. I dont think manifold va***e is the correct source for vac advance.
Uhh, I know from personal idiocy that my 400 Pontiac was a tad bit angry with me when I was running the advance on manifold vacuum...switch it to the carb baseplate and reset the distributor timing...
the full sotry is that this customer brought his 66 tempest into the pontiac dealer. The engine is "freshly rebuilt" by an expert and everything has been replaced except the distributor. If you set the timing it jumps around once you give it throttle then rests back at 40 degrees advanced. I didnt get a chance to set it at TDC, but im guessing the bushings are worn in the dist. along with the full vac singnal from the manifold at idle its a giant cluster ****. He is coming back on thurs when I have an open rack. my next question is what kind of timing set did they use on the 326? Was it a plastic gear lke the 283 and such? Another question, did the 326 use a cam ****on? I think the possibility of the cam walking around may be causing the insanity that is plaguing me. Thanks for your help guys.
Steel timing sets and no cam ****on, as far as what I've come across...as for a complete professional rebuild and using a stock worn out distributor, that's a waste of money on a rebuild...especially when GMCBubba charges so little to have one refurbished and brought up to specs...
Pontiacs came from the factory w/ a cam retaining plate, so the cam can't move around. The timing set, if original, was the typical GM POS aluminum/nylon thing. I seriously doubt anyone would reinstall that **** (it's expensive IF you can find it), when Summit, etc. sells a double roller setup for $29.00. The Pontiac Tempest 195 (half a 389) four banger had a good timing set on it, but why bother when new ones are so cheap. Good luck w/ it!
