how much power will a t10 take. i have what i think is a early 4 speed t10 behind a 428 my car should weigh in at around 1270 when finished with 8" rear wheels. i have been told by someone that races galaxys that it will break first time out? any thoughts would help cheers skippy
T-10 is a tough transmission,it's what the Richmond NASCAR transmission is based on,,I'd say your friend is nuts. HRP
Go back and have a look at how many big block cars came from the factory with them and how they held up.

Braking any good 4 speed usually has more to do with tire bite than horse power. If you can brake a tire loose the gear box won't go away. On the other hand any Idiot can Hammer one to death and finally Kill it. The Wizzard
so, your Galaxie weighs 1270 pounds (including the rear wheels) and you may be making enough power to grenade a T10? Is that what I'm reading?
But not many of the really hi-po big-blocks used them... Up until '64, the T10 was the only choice in a V8 car four speed. Ford replaced the T10 with their own 'top loader' transmissions starting in '64 behind the FE motors because of breakage with T10s, and GM and Chrysler both followed a few years later with their own versions; AMC soldiered on with the T10, but the biggest motor they offered was only a 401. The T10 was kept as an option behind many small-block offerings. The later Super T10 was a much-improved version, but by that time the really powerful factory motors were gone. As a street transmission in a light car with under 450 ft-lbs of torque, the early T10 should be fine. More torque, sticky tires, drag racing launches, yeah, it will probably blow up. A 428 will be pushing the envelope, I'd budget for another box....
no my car weighs 1270 its a willys and he says im waisting my time with a t10 im gona 1/4 mile it, he track races his galaxy but says he didnt get of the line with a t10
There are better choices than a T10 but if that's what you have run it until it brakes. I hurt a few but it wasn't in a street application. I think you need to seriously get your Willys on a scale and find the actual weight then on a chassis dyno and see just how much power you are dealing with. Dreams don't usually cost anything but having the real numbers will determine what parts you need for a build.
1270 kilos = 2799 lbs. I had a 63 1/2 Gallaxie 500 XL 427 with dual quads also know as an R code...weighed a lot more than that and I drove it like I stole it and never broke the t-10 that it came with.
Your going drag racing with a Willys and your using a T-10? You haven't been around much have ya. I guess that will be OK as long as your happy Show Boating and being a first round runner up. Some body has to sit in the Bleachers, right? The Wizzard
A 428 and t 10 and clutch are 750 lbs or more a complete rear end 200 lbs that only leaves 320 for the rest of the car.
I have a 32ford sedan streetrod running a tunnel ramed 460 and c6 trans with 9" diffed aftermarket rear it weighs in at 1283 kilos on the scales with comfy seats. I thought that if I used that weight as a guide I should be able to get the willys near to that weight I am lead to believe a stock 33 willys chassis weighs less that a boxed 32 ford and i thought the 460 and 428 were about the same weights with all the alloy bits fitted. as its a 428 with a mild cam, I would guess about 300 ish bhp (the build speck is 30 over balanced bottom end, but I have not had this checked yet) I brought the engine and box together. what I wanted to know as ive never used a manual box behind a big block before was ,what the thoughts on the t10 power handling rating by people that have used them.
That 428 is putting out more than 300-ish HP; the 'plain vanilla' 428 used in the T-birds and full-size Fords was rated at 360HP, but what throws people off is Ford rated the 428CJ at 'only' 335. It was seriously underrated (to mollify the insurance companies and 'fool' NHRA), NHRA eventually 'factored' it up to north of 400 (465HP IIRC). If you're not getting 400HP out of that motor, something is wrong... And even a 'mild' 428 will deliver a ton of torque; transmissions are rated in torque, not HP. If you're planning on racing it, it's not 'if' but 'when' the T10 breaks....
cheers for the help and yes there will loads of torque (I hope ) the 460 has loads. I want to build a 60s correct gasser. i was at a swap meet today and should of brought the five speed doug nash, but not sure they were around in the 60s and I have the t10. I guess after the first time out I will have to move the cross members and get a new box, or maybe get a pair of positraction rear tyres before the box breaks. the last pair I had were really hard so maybe something like that will help the box
